Michael McDonald started his music career at a very young age and started playing with several local bands in his hometown of Missouri. Once, when he was playing with a music group called Blue, he was discovered by a record label, which offered him a contract. Subsequently, he moved to Los Angles in 1970. That marked the beginning of his professional music career that was going to take him to the heights of fame. Early seventies saw him recording several promo songs, which were later combined ito form an album titled, ‘That Was Then’.
Sometime later, McDonald became part of the Steely Dan band, as a back-up vocalist for ‘Katy Lied’, released in 1975. ‘The Royal Scam’ album that was released the following year also included considerable contributions by McDonald, as well as ‘Aja’ that was released in 1977. McDonald also played keyboard for a number of tracks in these albums. ‘Gaucho’, another studio album came out in 1980. It also had McDonald’s background vocals. He was also part of the immensely popular tour taken by the Steely Dan in the seventies, as the keyboard player as well as vocalist.
In 1975, The Doobie Brothers recruited Michael McDonald, when their lead singer Tom Johnston fell ill during a national tour. McDonald’s association with the band proved to be so successful that the band decided to keep him as a permanent member. During his years with the band, McDonald recorded some of the most popular songs by the band, including ‘Takin’ it to the Streets’, ‘Real Love’, ‘Minute by Minute’ and ‘Little Darling’. One of the tracks, ‘What a Fool Believes’ went on to become the number one single in the U.S., and also earned the band a Grammy Award in 1980. This is not all for the talented musician; he has also appeared as the piano player and session singer with renowned artists like Stephen Bishop, Bonnie Raitt, Christopher Cross Kenny Loggins and Jack Jones. McDonald has also proven himself time to time in songwriting.
Michael McDonald has had an equally impressive solo career. After the farewell tour of The Doobies, Michael went on to release his solo album in 1982, titled as ‘If That’s What it Takes’. He continued to collaborate with other artists and kept writing songs as well. Alongside, his fan following continued to soar.
