Spearhead was formed in 1994 by the talented musician Michael Franti. Franti had begun his career in 1986, with the spoken word/industrial punk band, The Beatnigs. The band achieved limited success, courtesy of their EP titled Television. In 1990 the band disbanded and Franti established another project, Disposable Heroes of Hypocrisy. Their politically charged lyrics and social commentary on the first album, Hypocrisy is the Greatest Luxury, struck a note with critics and peers. Michael Franti was adopted by Carole Wisti and her husband, Charles Franti, a professor at UC Davis.
