Method Man was born Clifford Smith in Hempstead, Long Island, New York. He spent much of his youth shuttling between Long Island where his delinquent father lived, and Staten Island, where his mother lived.
Method Man is Born
Staten Island would have a profound impact on Smith as it became the place where he would meet the other members of what would one day become the Wu-Tang Clan. Staten Island would later come to be referred to as ‘Shaolin’ by the Clan.
During his younger years, Smith dropped out of school numerous times and even dabbled with drugs. It was during this time that he started rapping and hanging out with people like Robert Diggs (also known as Prince Rakeem or RZA) as well as his cousins Russell Jones (Ol’Dirty Bastard) and Gary Grice (also known as the Genius or GZA).
The Wu-Tang Clan is Created
A few years later, these four would join forces with Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, U-God, and Inspectah Deck in order to form the Wu-Tang Clan. Together, these eight individuals would put all of their resources together in order to record a single called ‘Protect Ya Neck/After the Laughter’. The single did incredibly well and sold over 15,000 copies in 1992. They were soon signed by Loud Records, a label which also offered each member a separate solo deal as well.
In 1993, the Wu-Tang Clan released their first full-length album called Enter the 36 Chambers. The album featured hit singles like "C.R.E.A.M./Da Mystery of Chessboxin'" and "Protect Ya Neck.” Method Man was always the most recognizable member of the group and provided some of the catchiest hooks in their songs.
Because Method Man was arguably the most visible member of the band, it was no wonder that he was the first to release a solo album.
Method Man Branches Off
In 1994, Method Man went on to release his debut full length studio album called Tical. The album was a huge critical success and debuted on the American music charts at the number four spot. This album alone would go on to sell over a million copies.
The massive single “All I Need”, which was later remixed featuring Mary J. Blige, would go on to win a Grammy Award.
This album catapulted Method Man into the spotlight like never before. He befriended The Notorious B.I.G., and would become the only artist to guest rap on his debut album Ready to Die. He was also featured on a number of other albums including AmeriKKKa’s Nightmare (Spice 1), Goodfellas (Showbiz and A.G.), All Eyes on Me (Tupac Shakur), and Muddy Waters (Redman).
As the years past, Method Man’s fortunes would continue to rise. The Wu-Tang clan was doing fantastic, including internationally, and their second album, Wu-Tang Forever, would go on to become a multiplatinum Grammy nominated album.
However, although the Wu-Tang Clan was doing fantastically, Method Man was always doing much better. During this time, he formed a bond with another hip hop artist, Redman, who he would continue to collaborate with for many years to come.
Method Man has released six full length solo studio albums of his own, including his most recent release, Crystal Meth in 2016.
He has also released four collaborative albums, three with Redman, and one with Ghostface Killah and Raekwon.
In addition to his incredibly successful music career, Method Man has also done a lot of acting, appearing in a number of successful TV shows and movies.
