Meshuggah was formed at Umea, Sweden in 1985 by Fredrik Thordendal and Jens Kidman. Four years later after making their way to clubs and making a little name for themselves in and around the metal scene in Umea, they came out with a self-titled EP which had only three tracks. The next year was a big one for them as it landed them their first recording contract when they signed an agreement with the label Nuclear Blast. That contract enabled them to work on their debut album titled Contradictions Collapse. It hit the music stores in October, next year and immediately became a huge critical success. That was followed up by an EP titled None which had a Japanese version as well.
 
Meshuggah went on a trip to Europe in 1995 which was set up by Nuclear Blast which helped to improve their profile out of their native country. The group hit the studio as soon as they came back home to start working on their next album titled Destroy Erase Improve. Before the release of the album, Meshuggah went on a two month long European tour with the legendary Machine Head. The album came out on 25^th July, 1995 to a lot of critical praise for the kind of music it was based on. That commercial launch was followed by another month long journey. The band then took a strategic decision to move to the bigger and more cosmopolitan Stockholm in order to be closer to their label and the thriving music industry. The True Human Design, an EP, hit the stores in the later part of the year 1997. Their next creation was titled Chaosphere that came out in 1998 and was followed by a US tour by Meshuggah. This was the time when the group had finally started to generate headlines in the mainstream media and popularity charts.
 
After multiple tours to various parts of Europe and US the band released their album titled Nothing in 2002. It was Meshuggah’s first album that appeared on the Billboard 200 which further improved the band’s standing. As the year came to a close, they went on a major tour as its headlining act. The group then decided to evolve their music and the result was Catch Thirtythree which was released in 2005. It made an appearance on the Billboard 200 as well to bring their way a first Swedish Grammy nomination. They named their next album obZen that came out in March, 2008.  The release was a culmination of a year long effort and all the hard work paid off as it went on to become Meshuggah’s biggest commercial hit to that date. The success was celebrated by embarking on a world tour that took them to various venues around the world. The tour was a huge success as the fans bought Meshuggah tickets in thousands to make it an unprecedented hit.
