After he was released from the Juvenile detention center for the fourth time, Lefty Frizzle heard him and offered him to perform in a concert. Eventually Haggard chose singing as his career. But again he was caught robbing a tavern and was sent to the prison.  During his time in prison, he learnt to live life honestly and decided to lead a normal life

. This time when he came out of prison he was a different man. He obtained a diploma and performed with the prison’s band.
The career of Merle Haggard started off with his song “Skid Row” in 1962 and he gave his first hit in 1964 with “Sing a sad song”. In 1968, his song “I’m a lonesome fugitive” was a major success.
