Merle Haggard was born in 1937 in Oildale, California. His parents moved to California from Oklahoma at the time of the great depression during which many families moved to California. Haggard’s father died when he was only nine years old. He supported his family after that with any means of income. He was caught for theft and shoplifting three times. He also used to perform in the bar and work other odd jobs. After he was released from the Juvenile detention center for the fourth time, Lefty Frizzle heard him and offered him to perform in a concert. Eventually Haggard chose singing as his career. But again he was caught robbing a tavern and was sent to the prison. During his time in prison, he learnt to live life honestly and decided to lead a normal life
. This time when he came out of prison he was a different man. He obtained a diploma and performed with the prison’s band.
The career of Merle Haggard started off with his song “Skid Row” in 1962 and he gave his first hit in 1964 with “Sing a sad song”. In 1968, his song “I’m a lonesome fugitive” was a major success. It is still his most popular song with the audience. After that he gave one hit after another. The president Ronald Reagan pardoned him of all his crimes. Merle has become a legend in the country music. He has influenced country music greatly. Many new singers have paid tribute to him in their songs. His name is mentioned in many songs. His music has a hard edge to it which is liked by many country music lovers. Toby Keith has stated that merle has a major influence in his career. Nick Gravenites has sung “I’ll change your flat tire Merle”, while the Dixie Chicks has sung “Now they sound tired, but they don’t sound like Haggard”. His influence is seen also in the song “My kind of a girl” by Collin Raye.
