Melendi is a Spanish singer and songwriter who was born in Oviedo, Asturias, in January 1979. From an early age, his parents realized that Melendi wasn’t cut out for traditional schooling. They therefore allowed him to focus the majority of him time, energy, and efforts on things which he enjoyed such as soccer and music. Melendi spent most of his youth on the streets of Oviedo as opposed to in a classroom. Here, he says he spent time learning a great many "lessons that they don't teach in school."
While in school, Melendi was in class with Fernando Alonso, a future Formula One race car driver. The two were good friends and Melendi even dedicated one of his future songs to him called ‘Magic Alonso’. Inspired by his friend, Melendi tried race car driving himself for a while but soon realized that he wasn’t cut out for it.
After leaving school and his race car driving ambitions behind, Melendi focused on playing football, which he was very good at. He played in the lower ranks of a club Astur CF, which used to be the reserve team for Real Oviedo. He also spent time working as a waiter at a number of bars. His eclectic range of experiences would all one day serve as inspiration for the lyrics to his songs.
The Beginnings of his Musical Career
In 2001, Melendi decided to join a group which was called "El bosque de Sherwood", meaning Sherwood Forest. He spent a couple of months with them which inspired him to start recording music of his own. Shortly afterwards, Melendi went into the studio to record three songs "El informe del forense," "Sin noticias de Holanda" and "Vuelvo a traficar."
By 2002, a good friend of his passed on Melendi’s demo containing three songs to Javier Valiño, from Carlito Records. Valiño really liked what he heard and decided to sign Melendi on to the record label right away.
In February 2003, Melendi released his first full length studio album called Sin Noticias de Holanda. The album featured 12 songs, all of which Melendi wrote and composed himself. To promote his first album, Melendi headed out on a short national tour which helped him gain exposure. The album was such a hit that by the following year, in 2004, Melendi was appearing in the Top 100 on the national charts. It didn’t take long for the album to be certified gold.
The Music Keeps on Flowing
In 2005, Melendi was ready to release his second album. His sophomore effort was called Que el Cielo Espere Sentao. Following the release of the album, Melendi had his first daughter and then went on more tours to promote his music.
Not wanting to lose his momentum, Melendi wasted no time in recording more material. By 2006, he was ready to release his third album entitled Mientras No Cueste Trabajo.
His fourth album was released two years later in 2008. Curiosa la Cara de tu Padre was produced by José de Castro and featured the massively popular hit single “Un Violinista en Tu Tejado”.
He would then release his fifth album in 2010. This album marked a clear-cut departure from his previous style of music which was rumba inspired pop. This popular blend was what helped him rise to fame. Melendi decided to take a risk and incorporate more rock elements into his fifth album which was called Volvamos a Empezar.
The fans seemed to like his new style of music and Melendi continued to incorporate rock into his music with his sixth release in 2012 called Lágrimas Desordenadas and his seventh release in 2014 called Un Alumno Más. Un Alumno Más was a highly critically acclaimed album and was praised as being Melendi’s most raw, honest, and mature pieces of work.
In 2015, Melendi released Directo a septiembre, a live album. This was awarded the Premio de la Música as well as numerous other awards from musical media stations Cadena Cien and 40 Principales.
His latest album, Quítate las gafas, was released in November 2016. If you want to see him perform live on stage then get Melendi tickets now.
