McDonald's Gospelfest held its inauguration in 1983 and was introduced as a talent competition, gospel music festival and a fundraiser. The festival helps in providing educational opportunities to the local communities. Since its inception, the event has been celebrating gospel music, all the while inspiring and bringing joy to the millions of Americans. For the past eight years, the festival is being held at the Prudential Center and has produced some great entertainers. Many previous participants, including Bishop Hezekiah Walker, have gone on to become stars after launching their careers from this platform.
McDonald's Gospelfest is a marathon of spiritual music, poetry and marquee performances and praise dancing and rapping by stars of the genre. The festival has travelled across the Hudson River from Madison Square Garden to the Prudential Center. It has been an annual highlight of the center’s calendar since 2008 and once again the arena will be a holy ground for the event. Keeping in mind the success of the festival, people are rushing to buy McDonald’s Gospelfest tickets in advance.
McDonald's Gospelfest and Newark fit together like a firm handshake. The city is rich in gospel history and has produced The Drinkards, one of the most successful gospel singing groups. The renowned record label “Savoy” is also based here that specializes in black gospel, soul, R&B and jazz music. According to A. Curtis Farrow, “Newark is to gospel as Detroit is to soul”. Farrow has won two Emmy Awards in 2000 and 2001 for producing McDonald’s Gospelfest and has been nominated eight other times (2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2013). In 2014, Farrow fulfilled his longtime dream by coordinating and leading 1171 voices, breaking the Guinness World Record for “World's Largest Gospel Choir”. The same year, he recorded the most successful and well attended McDonald’s Gospelfest ever. The epic production spreads across the entire New York Tri-State area and every year brings a new theme. Previously held shows have been themed as “The Mighty Men of Valour” (2011), “Honor Thy Mother” (2012) and “Women Who Worship” (2014). 2015 festival has been titled “When the Choir Meets the Quartet”.
Auditions for McDonald’s Gospelfest are held in early January and the finalists are then invited to perform on the same stage alongside veterans. The participants compete in different categories which include Soloists, Youth Choir, Adult Choir, Step, Praise Dance, Singing Groups, Gospel Poets, Gospel Comedians and Gospel Rappers. Gospel fever radiates the event and many big names have graced the festival’s stage. McDonald’s Gospelfest has seen performances by Kirk Franklin, Donnie McClurkin, Aretha Franklin, Smokie Norful, Lecrae, Shirley Caesar, Kim Burrell and Yolanda Adams.
