Mc Lyte fell in love with music at a very early age. She first started to test her vocal skills when she was only twelve years old. Four years later, came her first track which was titled "I Cram to Understand U." The song was originally written two years earlier than it came out. The song was good enough to show Lyte’s skills to the world and all that attention brought her way a recording contract from Atlantic Records.
That was the kind of break Mc Lyte had been looking for so she grabbed the chance with both hands. She did not waste any time and hit the studio to work on her debut album. "Lyte as a Rock" hit the music stores in the year 1988. It was a monumental release because made Lyte the first ever woman rapper in history to come out with a studio album. It was a watershed moment that broke the monopoly men had had over the genre.
Lyte as a Rock turned out to be a huge critical success as well. The album had critics raving about it and was given four and a half stars out of five by Allmusic. She waited two years to release her next album titled "Act Like You Know." Lyte changed the tune with this album. It was not as hardcore as her first two releases and had a more of an R&B coupled with soul theme to it. The change in direction worked a treat and Act Like You Know received positive feedback from both the commercial as well as the critical fronts.
A gap of another two years came before her next album "Ain’t No Other" came out in the year 1993. It turned out to be another big hit that was certified gold by the RIAA. "Bad as I Wanna B" was released in the year 1996 and was another hit. A lot of that was down to songs like "Keep On, Keepin’ On," " Have U Ever" and Cold Rock A Party" that went on to capture prominent position on various charts.
"Seven & Seven’’ and "Da Undaground Heat, Vol. 1" were released in 1998 and 2003 respectively. The track "Ride Wit Me" from the latter became a huge hit that and earned both a Grammy as well as a BET award nomination. Lyte’s success over the years has also brought her way Broadway and TV appearances.
