Mazzy Star is a rock band based in Santa Monica, California. It consists of Hope Sandoval as the lead singer, William Cooper who plays violin and keyboard, David Roback, the lead guitarist, Jill Emery on bass, Suki Ewers, also on keyboard. Sandoval and Roback write and compose music for the band, with Sandoval writing most of the lyrics, and Roback creating most of the tunes and providing music. The band is best known for their single, “Fade into You”. The song brought them quite the success in the 1990s and remains, to this date, the group’s biggest commercial success. It was through this single that they garnered attention of the mainstream audience and started to get a lot more hits on the radio, as well as more airtime on MTV and other music channels such as VH1. With the band hitting the band once more, Mazzy Star tickets are stirring up quite the anticipation amongst fans of alternative music.

Mazzy Star was first formed back in 1989. It is believed that they played a huge role in starting the movement now known as the “Californian Paisley Underground” in the 80s. Before they came together each band member was part of separate projects and already had some experience in the business. At the time, Roback was working with his brother Steven in a band called the ‘Rain Parade’. The band would play psychedelic revival music. However, Roback did not stick to this project for very long; he left the band for another venture soon after the first LP was released. Next, Roback teamed up with Clay Allison, and Kendra Smith who was working as a bassist for Dream Syndicate. Together in 1983 they released their single which was a double sided track, “Fell From the Sun/All Souls”. They called this new band, “Opal”. In 1987, they released an LP entitled “Happy Nightmare Baby”. Here, too Roback played the role of creative director, providing most of the music and lyrics and making creative decisions. Opal would go onto become the first step towards the band now known as Mazzy Star. They two bands have the same psychedelic guitar riffs with underlying tones of the blues and folk music as its basic foundation.

While Opal was working its way through the underground music community, Sandoval was working in the music group, Going Home, along with his schoolmate Sylvia Gomez. At this point, Sandoval was still in high school. The kind of music they created together had a raw, folksy sound. Even then, the pair were heavily influenced and intrigued by Rain Parade. As huge fans of the band, they went to see the band in concert one day in Los Angeles, back in 1983. After the show, Gomez was able to go backstage and meet Roback himself. It was there that they handed him a copy of some of their recorded material which featured Gomez on guitar, and Sandoval as the lead vocalist. Impressed by their material and sound, Roback offered to produce unreleased songs for an album for the duo. Soon after, Smith left Opal whilst they were touring for “The Jesus and Mary Chain”, and Sandoval was offered a place in the band instead.

Roback and Sandoval continued to tour together as Opal for the next two years. Under the obligation of contract, they had to release one more LP before they could renew their contract. Thus, together they wrote a lot of material which then made its way into their new venture, under a new band name, Mazzy Star. It was now that their single, “Fade Into You” suddenly became a commercial success, being considered by many as a sleeper hit. When “Capital Records” began to ask the band to produce more commercial music, it upset some band members, who wanted to continue doing music they liked. The increasing pressure and terms and conditions worried Sandoval, and so she asked to be relieved of the contract and go her own way.

In 2009, rumors of Mazzy Star’s reunion began to surface. Sandoval herself confirmed the news, explaining that the band had regrouped and was working on their fourth album. Finally, in 2011, they released a double sided single, “Common Burn/Lay Myself Down”. Mazzy Star tickets for a new concert were selling after a 15 year hiatus. The new tour was confirmed in early 2012. Along with Roback and Sandoval, Keith Mitchell and Suki Ewers will also rejoin the band to perform in the new shows. For long time fans of the world, Mazzy Star tickets will be available to them after a long, long wait.
