Over the past decade, Baltimore native Maysa Leak has slowly found her way on the top and has gained a loyal following. A phenomenal modern soul/jazz vocalist, her work has been lauded by millions for her unique presentation that blends deep, soulful voice with her keen sense of jazz phrasing. A classical mezzo-soprano, she has been blessed with alluring vocals, humor, candor and purity, all heightened by her magnetic stage presence. Blues & Soul Magazine has called her voice “as smooth and rich as chocolate”, whereas The Dallas Morning News described it as inspirational “…down-home funky one moment and elegantly jazzy the next”. You can now watch her spectacular live performance by getting Maysa tickets to her upcoming concerts.
Maysa has collaborated with music maestros like Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Incognito and Angela Bofill. She has hung out with the best and was called “wonderful” by the legendary Stevie Wonder. Following her graduation in the late 80s, Maysa earned her first major break when she joined Stevie Wonder's backing band, Wonderlove. She performed the Jungle Fever soundtrack and her deep, smoky vocals got the attention of Jean-Paul, frontman of Incognito. Maysa joined the group as its lead singer and still performs with it. She breathed life into the acclaimed singles, “Shade of Blue” and “Deep Water” and her duet with Mark Anthoni, “Still a Friend of Mine” became an international hit.
While recording music with Incognito, Maysa also came up with her debut solo album in 1995 and with the single “What About Our Love”, scored a minor hit. Her second record, “All My Life” was a hit and made it to the Contemporary Jazz charts. Maysa scored an even bigger hit in 2002 with her internationally acclaimed album “Out of the Blue”, which was declared by many Jazz & Soul publications as the best album of that year. Besides having a beautiful voice, Maysa also had the knack of working with the right producers who knew how to use her strengths. With the producers Rex Rideout and Bluey, she came up with her fourth solo album “Smooth Sailing”. It balanced her ingenious voice with delightful jazz arrangements and solid material. The singles “Charmaine” and “I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You” were critically acclaimed. Maysa followed it with her 2006 release “Sweet Classic Soul” that included covers of hit 70s’ and 80s’ soul/jazz classics. The album was received well by her fans and set the stage for the sequel “Feel The Fire”. Hitting the shelves in 2007, it earned her “Vocalist of the Year” honor at the SoulTracks Readers' Choice Awards.
In 2008, Maysa returned with her seventh album “Metamorphosis”. It highlights her diverse stylistic approach and includes popular tracks like My Destiny, Never Really Ever and Higher Love. In 2010 she treated her fans to “A Woman in Love”, followed by “Motions of Love” and “Blue Velvet Soul” released in 2011 and 2013 respectively. In “Blue Velvet Soul” Maysa has delivered velvety vocals that are mixed beautifully with soulful dance gems. The track Quiet Fire has also earned the songstress her first Grammy Award nomination.
Maysa is currently on tour with Dave Koz & Friends and will be opening the show with her smooth Jazz/R&B styling and heartfelt songs. Don’t miss her performance in your city.
