Starting out with the Staples
Led by the family patriarch, Roebuck “Pops” Staples on guitar, this group included the wonderful voice of Mavis along with her siblings Cleotha, Yvonne and Purvis. With such powerful vocals and Pops’ songs, the group soon went from being a purely gospel group to an influential spirituality-based group in America.
King, Civil Rights and the Staples
Since Pops’ was a close friend of the infamous Martin Luther King, Jr., it wasn’t long before the Staples became the spiritual and musical voices of the civil rights movement in the United States. They sang various pop hits with positive messages incorporated, including Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall”.
Mavis Staples first solo album came in 1969, a self-titled release for the Stax label. Soon after, she released a soundtrack album, A Piece of the Action, and in 1984, she released another self-titled album. Following this, came two albums under the direction of rock star, Prince; Time Waits for No One (1989) and The Voice (1993). The Voice was named one of the Top Ten Albums of 1993 by People magazine. In 1996, Staples released Spirituals and Gospel: A Tribute to Mahalia Jackson, as an acknowledgement of the significant influence of Mahalia Jackson on Staples’ life. With eight solo albums released up to this point in her solo career, Staples still hadn’t found much of an audience for her music.
Have A Little Faith
This album was released in 2004, after the death of her father in 2000. It received rave reviews from fans and critics alike and paved the way to greater success in future years, with the albums We’ll Never Turn Back (2007) and Live: Hope at the Hideout (2008). Her latest album, You Are Not Alone, won the Grammy for ‘Best Americana Album.’
