With the hit singles like Nothing Left to Lose, All I Need, Breath in Breath Out, Hey Mama and Down, Mat Kearney has earned his fair share of reputation in the music industry. Soon after his major label debut, Kearney rose to mainstream popularity as his album received critical acclaim. With that massive fan following also came to Kearney, and presently he enjoys widespread fan base all across the nation.
Kearney grew up in Eugene, Oregon listening to music from the likes of Bob Dylan and A Tribe Called Quest. Later on, Kearney went on to study literature at California State University, where he started playing guitar for the first time. Kearney started playing his roommate’s guitar, and began covering other famous songs of that time. After he discovered that he is not that good enough at guitar playing to be covering songs, so he decided to write his own material.
Soon after experimenting with his newly started hobby, Kearney started playing at local coffee shops and bars, and started making some money off it as well. Later he met and became friends with Robert Marvin and started making music with him. Marvin would later go on to become Kearney’s producer in future. After sometime, Marvin had to move to Nashville and he asked for Kearney’s help in relocating to Nashville. As the two reached there, Kearney decided to stay in Nashville and record few demos. After making that decision, Kearney stayed in Nashville for a couple of months until he finally decided not to go back to Eugene at all and he has been living in Nashville since then.
Mat Kearney released his second studio album titled Nothing Left to Lose on April 18, 2006 on Columbia Records. The album came out to be a huge commercial and critical success and sold over 450,000 copies to date. The title track from the album was released as the first single from the album, and it also managed to sell 500,000 copies. The single also earned numerous awards including BMI Awards. All I Need was another single from the album that did considerably well, and was featured in hit TV series Grey’s Anatomy. It also charted on iTunes top 100 downloaded songs. Following the release of his second album, Kearney went on tour with the artists like Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, Train, Cary Brothers and MUTEMATH to help promote his album. In 2007, he also performed as a headlining act at the You Oughta Know Tour.
On May 19, 2009 Kearney came up with his follow up studio release titled City of Black & White. The album was also released by Columbia Records and featured other artists like Will Sayles, Josiah Bell, Paul Moak and Daniel James. Close to Love and All I Have were released as first two singles from the album. The album peaked and debuted at #13 spot on Billboard 200 Chart. Later on Kearney went on a tour with The Hello Sequence and Keane to support his album. Kearney released his most recent studio work on August 2, 2011 by the name of Young Love. Prior to the release of the album, Kearney released Hey Mama as the first single from the album and it peaked at #22 spot on Adult Pop Songs. Down was released as the follow up single of the album.
Over the years, Kearney’s work has been featured in a number of hit TV series as well. His songs have been a soundtrack for the shows like Grey’s Anatomy, What About Brian, 30 Rock, Friday Night Lights, The Closer, NCIS, Wildfire and Without A Trace. Kearney’s live performances attract a huge number of his followers to the venue as well. His soulful voice and carefully written lyrics have captured the hearts of many of his listeners.
