Born in Philadelphia, Mississippi on the 30th of September, 1958, John Martin Stuart is not only an amazing singer, but also a very talented songwriter. He is a Grammy Award winning musician with countless hit songs and albums to his credit. He is famous for his traditional style of music that has mixed elements of traditional country music, honky-tonk and rockabilly. His music mostly revolves around the genres of gospel, southern rock, bluegrass and country. He plays a variety of instruments such as the mandolin, electric guitar and acoustic guitar.
Over the course of his professional music journey, he has worked with numerous recording companies such as Superlatone Records, Universal South Records, MCA Records, Columbia Records and Sugar Hill Records. He started his career in the music industry in 1972. Ever since then, there has been no looking back for this brilliant musician. He has produced some great quality music over the years and continues to do so.
Stuart mastered many instruments as a child. At twelve years, he was a member of the renowned gospel group, The Sullivans. A little later, he had the opportunity to audition for the bluegrass legend, Lester Flatt. Flatt was so impressed with his mandolin play, that he made him a part of his band when Stuart was only thirteen years old. In the same year, Marty performed at the Nashville based weekly country music concert, Grand Ole Opry. He stayed with the group for eight years, until Flatt had to retire due to health reasons. In the year 1978, he joined Doc and Merle Watson.
A year later, he married Cindy Cash, daughter of Johnny Cash, and subsequently joined the band, Tennessee Three. In these years, the multi-instrumentalist became a sought after session musician. In the year 1986, Marty Stuart managed to get a contract with Columbia Records. His first single, Arlene went on to be placed on the top 20. However, the album that followed did not sell that well. Consequently, Columbia Records lost interest in further collaborations with him.
At that time, Marty Stuart briefly went back to Sullivan. In 1989, he signed a contract with the MCA label. A change of style from bluegrass to rockabilly proved to be promising. He released another album the same year with the title of Hillbilly Rock. This produced Top Ten hits and went on to become much more successful than his previous album.
His breakthrough came in 1991, when he sang a duet with Travis Tritt. It was named The Whiskey Is not Workin'. This track reached number three on the country charts. What followed was a successful joint tour. In 1992, he received a Grammy Award. He then released another album in collaboration with Travis Tritt. It was titled This One's Gonna Hurt You. The record went on to earn Gold status and several singles which made their way to the Top 10 and Top 20. He became a regular performer at the Grand Ole Opry in the year 1993.
In addition to his music activities, Stuart is known for his memorabilia collection of the country music. He has bought guitars of several music stars. His extensive collection also includes costumes and manuscripts of Hank Williams. You can now catch this brilliant musician live in action, if you get your Marty Stuart tickets today!
