Mark Knopfler is considered one of the most celebrated British guitarists who emerged in the music scene in the 70s. Knopfler rose to fame in the late 70s as the frontman of the band Dire Straits. His incisive guitar work and songwriting played an important role in making him an internationally successful artist. Knopfler made his entry in the music world when new wave and punk were quite popular and heavy metal was resulting in nosier guitar solos. Never once tempted by the style, he composed clean and traditional rock n roll music that impressed many. Since then he has evolved into a songwriter, vocalist, producer, guitarist and film composer. Mark Knopfler has worked with some of the best and known artists in the music industry. He has recorded and performed music with Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Chris Botti, Sting and Van Morrison, among others.
Born in Glasgow, Mark Knopfler’s father was an architect and his mother was a schoolteacher. When he was seven, the family moved to England and Mark developed an interest in music while spending a lot of time with his uncle. He started learning to play guitar and at 16 recorded a demo. While the demo didn’t make it far, he joined a local group and started performing with them. The band was successful enough to merit an appearance on local television. Following his stint with the band, Mark went to Harlow Technical College in 1967 and studied journalism. He started working at the Yorkshire Evening Post as a music critic. Two years later he decided to return to college and enrolled at Leeds University. It was there that he met Steve Phillips, a fellow guitarist, and they formed the band the Duolian String Pickers. Spending time with Phillips, Mark learned the finger-picking style that went on to become his signature style.
Moving to London after his graduation, Mark Knopfler joined a rock band Brewer's Droop in 1973, but this was a short-lived venture. He then joined hands with some local musicians and performed as the Café Racers. Later, he partnered with his guitarist brother David Knopfler and his friend John Illsley, who was a bassist and formed the successful band Dire Straits. Their lineup was complete with the addition of drummer, Pick Withers. From then onwards nothing but success and fame came their way. The band’s demo was played by BBC’s popular DJ Charlie Gillett and it earned them a deal with Warner Bros. in the US. Their self-titled record hit the shelves in 1978 and it featured the acclaimed number Sultans of Swing.
After recording massive hits with Dire Straits, Knopfler started expanding his creative boundaries and eventually in 1996 embarked on his solo career. As a solo musician he has released eight albums so far and his latest one “Tracker” is scheduled for March 2015 release. Mark Knopfler has his name on the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” list by the Rolling Stone Magazine and has won four Grammy Awards, along with numerous other honors. In his live shows, he enchants the crowd with his super-sized opening sets and tremendous guitar playing.
