Marinella was born as Kyariaki Papadopoulou in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki. Her parents were refugees from Istanbul, Turkey. She was the fourth child in a large family, who got involved in music at the age of four when she started singing on the radio broadcast in “Pediki Ora (Children’s Hour)”. She also did ads for local shops and managed to earn enough to serve as her pocket money. During this time, she continued to participate in many performances of children’s theater.
When she was 15 years old, she decided to put a hold to her music career and focus on finishing high school. However, by the age of 17, her passion in music increased and she ended up becoming a part of a troupe of singers that travelled the whole country for performances all around. One day, the lead singer of the group fell ill and asked Marinella to take her place as the lead. Marinella took this opportunity and began her journey to become one of the leading representatives of Greek music in the world. She began her career as a singer at the “Panorama” center in Thessaloniki and was given her stage name, Marinella there, by Tolis Harmas.
The Music of Marinella
Marinella released her first song in 1957, called “Nitsa, Elenitsa (Little Helen)”. In the early part of her career, Marinella managed to strike a collaboration deal with Stelios Kazantzidis. This collaboration turned out to be very fruitful for both of them and they became the greatest duet of Greek music, an honor they still hold till today.
After receiving early success, the duo moved to Athens, for the advancement of their music careers. Here, they became widely known, after singing songs of artists such as Mikis Theodorakis, Vassilis Tsitsanis, Manos Hadjidakis, Apostolos Kaldarasm Stavros Xarchakon and Christos Leontis among others.
On 7th May, 1964, Marinella married Stelios Kazantzidis and toured with him in various countries, including Germany and the US. The marriage ended in 1966 and Marinella then began her solo career.
In October of 1970, the rising Greek star took part in the V Festival Internacional da Cançao Popular – Parte Internacion (FIC) that happened in Rio de Janeiro. She represented Greece and sang the song “Kyra Giorgena (Wife of George)”. For her rendition of this famous song, she finished 4th out of 38 countries.
Marinella was also the first Greek singer who took part in the MIDEM Festival in 1973 in Cannes and in the Eurovision Song Contest of 1974. In addition to these competitions, the singer has also performed in quite a few Greek musicals.
She became hugely popular, specifically in the 1960s, 1970s and the 1980s, thanks to a string of successful albums, combined with live shows.
