Raised by an Episcopalian mother and a Catholic father, Marilyn Manson's preoccupation with the theme of death and hell are apparent in his music videos and songs. His autobiography The Long Hard Road Out of Hell describes his life in Canton, Ohio where he was born, and later in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he went to school and began his career as a journalist before he entered showbiz. He wrote articles on the subject of music for 25th Parallel, a South Florida lifestyle magazine. This experience shaped Manson's own style as a musician. Some of the bands that influenced him are My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult and Nine Inch Nails.
Manson entered the music scene by first working as a producer for a band he helped name: Jack Off Jill. Manson produced most of their early music. He also wrote the liner notes to the Jack Off Jill's album Humid Teenage Mediocrity 1992-1995. Marilyn Manson collaborations include DMX's album Flesh of my Flesh, Blood of my Blood as well as 2000 Years of Human Error, an album by Godhead.
Marilyn Manson is mainly known as a lead vocalist but his instrumental repertoire entails the guitar, drums, and pan flute. Manson has taken part in several episodes of MTV's series Celebrity Deathmatch. He has come to be associated with the show, a mascot of sorts, contributing his well-known song "Astonishing Panorama of the Endtimes" to the show.
Manson made his cinematic debut in 1997 when he acted in Lost Highway. Afterwards, he took minor roles and made cameo appearances for films such as Party Monster, Jawbreaker, The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things, The Hire: Beat the Devil and many others. Manson was interviewed in Bowling for Columbine, Michael Moore's celebrated documentary, which features a discussion with Moore about whether violent lyrics and grotesque music (such as his own) play a key role in influencing juveniles to commit crimes. Manson has also done an animated character in Clone High. Film Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll is eagerly awaited (2010). Manson plays writer Lewis Carroll in this cinematic work that he has directed, and for which he has written the musical score.
