Mana's origins date back to a band called Sombrero Verde, whose members included José Fernando (Fher) Olvera, Gustavo Orozco, and brothers Calleros Juan Diego and Abraham. In the year 1978, they decided to play different songs of several bands they admired, including The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. Initially, they were named The Green Hat Spies, but shorty afterward, the name was shortened to Green Hat and eventually changed to Mana. In the year 1981, they released their debut album, Green Hat with the label Ariola. This did not become as successful as they had hoped however.
In the year 1983, Mana released their second album, which was titled A Tiempo de Rock. This was released with the collaboration of Swan Raff. The singles from the album included Laura, Hechos Nada Más and Me Voy al Mar. These two albums had little success. By the mid 80s, a movement began in Mexico called "Rock in your language". As a result, there appeared several Mexican groups formed with the middle class youth and musical influences of bands such as The Police, The Cure, Paralamas do Sucesso, Led Zeppelin and many others as well. Thus emerged the leading bands of the movement: Caifanes, Maldita Vecindad, Café Tacuba, and among them, Mana, achieving success not only locally but also internationally.
In the midst of this nascent movement, the band adopted the name that would gain them international recognition, Mana. With Fher Olvera on the vocals and brothers, Juan and Ulises Calleros on the guitar and bass, respectively, the training was completed with the addition of a young drummer of the Cuban-Colombian origin: Alex Gonzalez . The group's name was chosen by the meaning of the word in Polynesian called "positive energy." In the year 1987, the group was offered a recording contract to the label Polygram, which they accepted, and then and released another album, which was titled Mana. Despite some success, their first recording as Mana did not leave the members of the group completely satisfied. Their interest in commercial music finally led Mana to sign with Warner Music.
In the nineties came essential changes for the group. Fher and Alex decided to take the production of their albums in their hands. With that in mind, the band recorded the album, Falta Amor that did not succeed until a year after its launch and after Mana had toured the country, giving more than 350 concerts. The single Rayando el Sol became the first major success of the band, gaining popularity all over the world. In1992, Mana went through a change of alignment with the exit of Ulises Calleros and the arrival of two new members: keyboardist Iván González and guitarist César "Vampiro" López. With this new formation, the band recorded their new album, Dónde Jugarán Los Niños?, with sales of more than a million copies in Mexico and eight singles in the charts throughout the United States.
From then onwards, there has been no looking back for these talented musicians. They have won various awards for their works, including five MTV Video Music Awards Latin America, five Latin Grammy Awards, five Latin Grammy Awards, four Premios Juventud awards and various more as well. The sound of the band usually revolves around reggae, calypso, ska, latin pop and pop rock. They have managed to sell more than 25 million copies of their records all over the world, and continue to make outstanding music, while touring in all parts of the world. Now, this incredible band is coming to perform in you city, and this is an opportunity of a lifetime! Join them in their latest live concerts with your Mana tickets and prepare to have a rocking experience!
