Madame Butterfly Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center Tickets
Madame Butterfly is an Italian opera penned by Giacomo Puccini and has greats like Luigi Illica and Guiseppe Giacosa worked on the libretto. It finds its origins in 1898 book “Madame Butterfly” written by John Luther Long and Pierre Loti’s masterpiece “Madame Chrysanthème” in 1887. The opera consists of three acts, although the original version had two acts. It first premiered in 1904 in Milan. The opera is being played again throughout the US and Madame Butterfly Metropoliton Opera at Lincoln Centre tickets are available for five different dates.
When the opera was first played in Milan in 1904, it was poorly received. This was despite the fact that top notch singers and actors, including Giovanni Zenatello, Rosina Storchio, and Guiseppe De Luca were playing the lead roles. It was deduced that it was perhaps the lack of rehearsal that caused the incompetence. Thus the decision was taken to split the opera into three acts to work on them even more. The next time the opera was played in Brescia, it was a huge success. The modern adaptation can be viewed at Madame Butterfly Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center performance.
The opera is about a faithful and trusting Japanese girl, Cio-Cio-San who meets and American sailor, Pinkerton and falls in love with him. Unfortunately, Pinkerton regards their relationship as a temporary fling, and marries her with the intention of leaving soon after. The plot thickens as the opera goes on to show what Pinkerton left behind.
