Machine Gun Kelly’s real name is Richard Colson Baker and he’s usually referred to as MGK in the industry. Born in 1990, the rapper began his career at a young age in 2006 by releasing a mixtape, which announced his arrival to the industry.
Like many other young kids, MGK used music as an escape from his everyday life. Kelly’s mother had left the family and he lived alone with his father, who suffered from depression and was unemployed. MGK began listening to rap music in grade six and was influenced by its lyrical content and the lifestyle it portrayed. According to him, his first three big influences were Eminem, Ludacris and DMX. DMX’s track, “We Right Here” from his 2001 album, The Great Depression, in particular, was a huge influence and hooked the young boy onto the hip hop genre.
After moving with father to several different cities, the young artist finally found himself in Cleveland’s Shaker Heights High School. He convinced a local shop owner to become his manger and started performing around the local circuit. His rapid delivery style and stinging lyrics led fans to start calling him “Machine Gun Kelly” and he adopted the moniker as his stage name.
In 2006, he released his first official mixtape, Stamp of Approval. The mixtape helped establish him around the local Cleveland scene and he was soon invited to perform at venues and rap battles. In 2010, he released his second mixtape, which further popularized his profile.
However, despite his growing profile, he was still trying to make ends meet and was at one point working at Chipotle to make that month’s rent. He was living in his manager’s mother’s basement and it was there that he recorded some of his earliest material.
In May 2010, MGK announced himself to the nation by releasing his debut single from his upcoming album. Titled, “Alice in Wonderland”, it was critically acclaimed and earned the young rapper the Underground Music Award for Best Midwest Artist. The music video for the song also won the Best Music Video Award at the Ohio Hip-Hop Awards.
In 2010 he released his breakout mixtape, Lace Up. The mixtape featured the city anthem, “Cleveland”, which was used prior to Cleveland Cavalier home games and went on rotation at the city’s radio stations. The mixtape earned him nationwide attention and he was finally offered a recording contract with Bad Boy Records, who were impressed by his music. Sean Combs approached him himself and MGK started working on his debut album. He released a debut EP, Half Naked & Almost Famous, in March 2012. The EP debuted at number 46 on the Billboard 200 and laid the ground work for his debut album.
MGK announced that his new album would be titled Lace Up and would be released in October 2012. The lead single form the album, “Wild Boy”, was released in October and debuted at number 98 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single was certified gold and helped boost the album sales. The second single from the album, “Invincible” was another success and was used as the main theme for WWE’s flagship event, WrestleMania XXVIII.
The album itself debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 and peaked at number two on the Hip Hop albums chart.
Machine Gun Kelly’s successful debut album was followed by another successful EP, Black Flag. The EP was a precursor to his second album, General Admission, which was released in October 2015. The album was a number one hit on the Top Hip Hop Albums Chart and peaked at number four on the Billboard 200. The rapper is currently on a world tour to promote his latest album and you can catch him live in concert by getting Machine Gun Kelly tickets.
