Macbeth was written by William Shakespeare somewhere in the early 1600’s. Shakespeare is considered to be one of the world’s dramatists and playwright. He was a man of immense talent and wrote a wide variety of plays, poems and even histories. Macbeth was among the last tragic plays by Shakespeare, before this he had already written classic works like Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Othello, Time of Athens and King Lear. After Macbeth he only wrote two more tragic plays namely Antony and Cleopatra and Coriolanus. He wrote not only tragedies like Macbeth but also comedy works like The Comedy of Errors, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Much Ado About Nothing, The Taming of the Shrew and The Two Gentlemen of Verona. He has also written sonnets. Famous Italian poet and translator Andrea Maffei had the idea of making Macbeth opera. For this purpose Giuseppe Verdi was commissioned for this task in 1846. The libretto for this play was written by Francesco Marie Piave with some advice from Andrea Maffei. Giuseppe Verdi has composed a number of other famous operas such as Ernani, Nabucco, I Lombardi alla prima crociata, Jerusalem, La battaglia de Legnano, Rigoletto, Giovanna de Guzman, Don Carlos, la force du destin, Falstaff and Otello with Falstaff being his last work.
Macbeth was made into a four act opera with main roles including Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, Banco, Macduff, Malcolm, Doctor, Servant to Macbeth, Herald and the Assassin. Like in the actual play, the opera is set in 11th Century in Scotland. It tells the story of a brave army general named Macbeth was given a prophecy by three witches that one day he will be the ruler of Scotland. To fulfill this prophecy and upon instigation from his wife he eventually kills the king of Scotland named Duncan and becomes the king. Due to insecurity Macbeth becomes a tyrannical ruler who keeps on killing his enemies to protect his throne. This envy and greed for power eventually lead both Macbeth and his wife to haughtiness, lunacy which eventually leads to death. Over the years world renowned actors have reprised the roles of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth and the play has been adapted for not just opera but comic books, TV and mainstream movies.
Macbeth opera has been regularly staged from the last many decades and over the years it has garnered a huge fan following. Some critics consider it one of the best operas that have been staged in the last few decades. The music of Verdi is simply awesome so do come and watch it.
