Electronic, dream pop and ambient are defiantly the sounds that came through with the new millennium as contemporary music. The new millennium also brought the one of the most enjoyed and listened to acts of electronic and dream pop called M83. As an effort to materialize experimenting with shoegazing, French Musicians Nicolas Formageau and Anthony Gonzalez got together. Their idea was to create a band that took shoegazing to the commercial stream and win public’s opinion and appreciation. All it intended to do was tune up and down electric and dream pop like no one else has done. Viola! They found their focal points. Their experimentation brought forth a fresh electronic pop sound that became a sensational hit in the 2000s’. Critics found their reverberation original and technique quiet distinct than their counterparts. 

M83’s singing sublime lyrics that subdued in loud music of pop instruments and guitars gained instant fame. It was a deviant style and risky entry into mainstream pop, with a rather heavy commercial undertone and positivity. It generated great appeal and acceptance from public. With guitar imprints on M83’s version being rather subtle the band came forth with their signature mark on contemporary sound of dream pop weighed down shoegazing. M83 carried heavy influences of shoegazing as their source of inspiration. Together, in 2001, the band released the self titled album under the label Mute Records. This debut entry was not much visible on any front in Europe. In the next two years they churned out good music constructively as the sophomore release Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts (2003). In France, the first and second albums started an ambient fervor that took good four years to surface out. The debut album’s world wide release spread M83’s music across the globe. They won world wide acclaim from general audiences, academies and critics. Fresh and innovative undertones reflected in each piece derived by M83. The studio records did well on charts, more importantly, they called for M83 for a concert tours.
 
Like most hit bands, M83 also suffered the solo fever when Formageau left the band. Gonzalez headed the band with more enthusiasm to deliver an even better version of M83. The third studio album, Before the Dawn Heals Us came out in 2005 after M83 got an idea of what their strengths are. They rearranged for their weaknesses and maneuvered their music to the public’s demand. An example of these are interesting remixes for celebrated names in electronic and dream pop; Placebo, Daft Punk, White Lies, Van She, Godfrapp, , Depeche Mode’s, Deftones, Bumblebeez 81 and Maps. The first one to sink in well was the Block Party’s The Pioneers remix featured  on the performing band’s remix album Silent Alarm remixed. Other successful improvisations through remixes that became hits were Vila Attack. Kelly , Protege Moi, Black Cherry and Suffer Well.
 
Maturing M83 explored another connected yet similar genre of ambient, precisely what the band had been exploring as a part of their early career. Anthony penned lyrics and created music to deliver the band’s personal favorite, Digital Shades Vol I (2007). Dresses in all new attire M83 collaborated on the album with Laurent Fetis who continues to lend his expertise in ambient sounds. With his assistance, the band was able to create electronic pop afresh that paved way for the fifth studio release Saturdays=Youth (2008). In collaboration with experts o the ambient game, Ken Thomas, Ewan Pearson and Mogan Kibby. Hits from the albums were sequentially releases throughout in 2008 beginning with Couleurs. Grave Yard Girl, Kim and Jessie and We Own the Sky followed supporting the band’s commendable efforts as a contemporary pop act. Midnight City was released the first single from Hurry Up Were Dreaming (2011) the sixth albums. It shows the coming of age for the band. With almost a decade in mainstream music with mainstream influences, the band has resorted to the darker side of dream pop which is very epic. In order to support the mood, M83 seeks feature guitar acts like NIN. M83 also made music for Black Heaven (2010) OST that provided Black Hole and Marion's Theme as custom built tracks that delivered just  right!
 
Since their second album released M83 has been touring successfully. The years 2003, 2005, 2008, 2009 mark M83’s concert tours as promotional and support tours.
