Born in Chicago, Illinois as Wasalu Muhammad Jaco to parents of West African origin, Fiasco had to endure their painful separation as a 5-year-old child. His father still remained a pivotal figure in his life though, & being a prolific drummer, martial artist & engineer himself, he shaped Fiasco’s interests towards karate & guns to defend himself from drug dealers in the hood where he lived. Fiasco’s early music interest was highly varied, & despite his upbringing in a hostile environment, he remained a bookish & well-studied young man. He started rapping in junior high school, less out of interest for the genre but more because he accidentally found he was good at that particular skill. By age 19, Fiasco’s choice of musical career prompted his father to allow him to use his basement as a studio. He joined Da Pak, a group heavily influenced by the gangsta rap of NWA & Ice Cube, but it disbanded after only one release. Fiasco did not particularly like the heavy-worded release about women, alcohol & drugs, & a bit of conscientious thinking led him to resolve to remodel his output. Fiasco signed to Arista Records only to be shown the door when LA Reid was fired, but not before he had built a rapport with Jay-Z who considered his approach to rapping “a breath of fresh air”. He then sampled a few Kanye West songs, earning widespread recognition, including from the rapper himself, & released his debut hit single “Kick, Push”. Things were looking up for Fiasco as Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor came out in 2006 as his debut album. Assisted in its production by Jay-Z, it was critically lauded. The workup on the second album was overshadowed by a number of personal tragedies, including his father’s death & his business partner’s arrest. Fiasco then formed & toured with Child Rebel Soldiers, a super-group consisting of him, Kanye West & Pharrell Williams. Elaborate retirement plans were chalked out, & after modifications, two further albums were released. Fiasco has also released an album with his post-punk band, Japanese Cartoon, looking to expand his artistic horizons. His business ventures include Righteous Kung-fu (a skateboards, sneakers, & comics designing outlet), clothing line Fallacy of Rome with Le Messie, & a shoe-designing contract with Reebok O.G.
 
“Kick Push” hit #56 on the charts, & caught attention because of its unique rap dimension, telling of the love story between two skateboarding enthusiasts. Also notable on the four-time Grammy nominated album Food & Liquor were “I Gotcha” & Grammy winner “Daydreamin’” (feat. Jill Scott). Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool went on to achieve Gold certification, & topped the rap albums with four Grammy nominations. The concept album made it big on the weight of the melancholic “Superstar” & “Hip Hop Saved My Life”. Released in March, Fiasco’s Lasers has racked up a #1 debut, riding high on the Platinum single “The Show Goes On”. Japanese Cartoon’s In the Jaws of the Lords of Death is his post-punk release.
