Established in 2006, Los Campesinos! are a seven piece collective that performs indie pop music. Created by the students studying of Cardiff University, the band has earned massive critical acclaim. Even though the band was formed in Wales, none of the previous or current band members are from the Welsh area. The band has been able to release four studio albums up till 2011, two EPs and twelve singles. Their debut album came out in the year 2008, titled 'Hold on Now, Youngster' which was released through the Wichita Record label company. The second album was released in November, in the same year which was called 'We are Beautiful, We are Doomed'. Another album then came forward in 2010 called 'Romance is Boring' which was able to reach to the third spot on the US Top Heatseekers charts.

Their last album named 'Hello Sadness' released in 2011 and also reached the number three position on the US Top Heatseekers charts. When the band came about in 2006, it consisted of three members; Ellen Waddell playing the bass guitar, Neil Turner providing lead guitar expertise and Ollie Briggs playing the drums. They were soon joined by Tom Bromley, who also started as the lead guitarist. This was followed by the entry of the main lyricist, Gareth David who also became the vocalist for the band. Two others made it to the group as well; Aleksandra playing the keyboards and providing background vocals and finally Harriet Coleman on keyboards and violin. Los Campesinos! started off by playing at night clubs and were successfully able to play at gigs as well around the area of Cardiff. Songs like 'It Started with a Mix', 'Death to Los Campesinos!', 'You!' and 'Sweet Dreams Sweet Cheeks' were released through a demo which was also made available over the internet. This demo became popular and also earned live air time on a BBC Radio 1 presentation. Their big break occurred when they were invited to open for the Canadian band 'Broken Social Science' after which Wichita Records approached them to sign a deal.

Two singles were released in 2007 that were called 'Don't Tell Me to Do the Math's' and 'We Throw Parties, You Throw Knives'. In the same year, the Campesinos! signed with Arts and Crafts; a Canadian Label Company, to help them release these singles throughout North America and Canada. They released another single called 'You! Me! Dancing!' and started tours throughout London, Newport, Cardiff and Bath. It was in the same year that the band started its first ever full tour of the United Kingdom. After the release of their debut album, the band embarked on a North American and European tour in order to increase their fan base. Right after their second album was made public in the same year, the band went on to perform in Venezuela, Colombia and Argentina. This was their first ever performance in the South American region.

Band members suggest that their earliest influences were from bands like 'Guided by Voices', 'Pavement', 'Modest Mouse', 'The Magnetic Fields', 'The Beautiful South', and 'Joy Division'. Their first album was presented with joyous and lively music; however, the band has been trying to move to a darker side in order to rebuild their image. Their work also shows influence of B. S. Johnson's literature and death narratives. Over the years, the band has also experimented with expanding the use of instrumentals to produce more quality music.
