Los Caifanes’ original lineup included lead vocalist and guitarist Saul Henandez, bassist Sabo Romo, drummer Alfonso Andre and keyboardist and saxophonist Diego Herrera. Its name stands for "cool dude" in Mexican. The band was founded in 1984 as Las Insolitas Imagenes de Aurora, a band that was formed to perform live music for a movie being produced by Alejandro Marcovich’s brother. This band soon began performing live concerts all over Mexico City and its popularity grew day by day. It became a regular performer at famous venues like HighTower, Rockotitlan and El Jabali. In 1986, it recorded a demo but broke up after that.
The band then reformed as Los Caifanes in 1987 and performed its first live concert at the Rockotitlan. This first performance was sold out and the band’s popularity soared soon after. It recorded a four song demo that was then featured on Espacio 59, an independent radio show, and then approached CBS Records Mexico with their demo. At the time, dark wave look was not popular in Mexico and thus the band was ignored. However, the popularity of Spanish rock movement, Rock en Espanol, led to the band opening for Miguel Mateos, a famous Argentinean rockstar, during his Mexico City live concert. His producer, Oscar Lopez, was enchanted by the band’s demo and helped them to sign a deal with RCA Ariola Records. In 1989, the band released its debut self-titled album which was followed by an EP. This EP went on to sell three hundred thousand copies immediately with the song Matenme Porque Me Muero, Kill Me Because I’m Dying in English, becoming a hit single in Mexico and receiving a lot of radio airplay.
In 1988, Los Caifanes released a cover of La Negra Tomasa, The Black Woman Tomasa, a song by Guillermo Rodriguez Fiffe, which became a massive hit in Mexico and made the band famous internationally. By 1989, the group had become one of the best rock bands in Mexico and was performing sold out shows at venues such as the Auditoria Nacional in Mexico City, a ten thousand person venue. It became the first Mexican rock band to do so, establishing a record that is remembered to this day. Then it went to New York City to record the next album which was released as El Diablito. This album was extremely successful and was followed in 1992 by the album El Silencio. In 1994, Los Caifanes released another album through BMG Records and by 1994, it become a popular act worldwide, appearing regularly on MTV and even participating with the Rolling Stones during the band’s Mexico City performance.
In 1995, Los Caifanes went on a hiatus but returned in 2011 for a spectacular performance at the Coachella Festival, one of the best known American rock festivals, and the Vive Latino festival, a famous Latin music festival. It is now regarded as one of the greatest Mexican rock bands, which has inspired many rock bands today. It helped the Mexican rock scene to go to mainstream market. It has been cited as an influence by many Mexican rock bands, an achievement that should be celebrated with Los Caifanes tickets.
