American singer, songwriter and country musician, Loretta Lynn, is known the world over for her moving voice and strong country music roots. Born and raised in Butcher Hollow, a mining town in the state of Kentucky, Lynn had a natural inclination towards music. From a very young age, she began singing in churches and local community concerts. An early marriage changed her to the point that she put her love for music on the back burner and became engrossed in her family life. It wasn’t until she was gifted a guitar that she thought of taking music seriously.
In the early part of her career, Lynn began singing in a band named The Trailblazers, alongside his brother. She later entered a televised talent contest, through which one of the founders of Zero Records discovered her. Her first major breakthrough in the music industry came with the signing of a formal contract with Zero Records. Following her signing, she was asked to record four of her own songs including “I’m A Honky Tonk Girl,” “Whispering Sea,” “New Rainbow,” and “Heartache Meet Mister Blues.” She received immediate success with the release of her first two songs “I’m A Honky Tonk Girl” and “Whispering Sea.”
In 1960, she moved on to better things and signed on with music label Decca Records. “Success,” became her very first song to be released on Decca Records, in 1962. The single went straight into the top ten of music charts and this feat was repeated several times during her exemplary music career. Some of her hit top ten songs during the sixties include “Before I’m Over You,” “Wine, Women and Song,” “Happy Birthday,” and “Blue Kentucky Girl,” to mention a few. Her first ever self written song, “Dear Uncle Sam,” released in 1966 and went straight into the top ten of music charts. For most part of the sixties she stayed committed to the honky tonk genre of music and rarely experimented with other styles of music.
Her first major breakthrough came in the shape of her 1967 single, “With Love on Your Mind,” which became her first song to reach the number one spot. With this, her album, Don’t Come Home A’ Drinking, went to the top spot and made her one of the few country artists to have sold over half a million records. For the next few years most of her hit songs either stayed in the top ten or took the number one spot on the national music charts. Her hit song from the 1970, “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” charted at the top spot on the Billboard Country Chart. The hit song revolved around the story of her life growing up in a rural mining town in Kentucky.
In the early seventies, Lynn collaborated with Conway Twitty on several of her songs. Their partnership ended up being extremely fruitful and as a duo, they managed to record several hit singles including “After the Fire is Gone,” “Lead Me On,” “Feelings,” and “As Soon As I Hang Up the Phone” among others. Most of their songs as a duo frequently appeared in the top ten of music charts with five of them reaching the number one spot. With this success, the pair became well-known as the greatest country music duo of all time and also received the Vocal Duo of the Year Award by Country Music Association.
At the dawn of the 80’s, Lynn changed her style and started singing with a more pop influenced voice to stay afloat in the market with shifting trends. Increasingly more pop songs were now taking her place at the top of the charts, but even so, most of Lynn’s songs still managed to stay in top twenty of music charts. The eighties brought even more success for Lynn with songs like “Pregnant Again,” “Naked in the Rain,” and “Somebody Led Me Away,” becoming hits overnight. With this she became the first female country artist to have charted fifty songs in the top ten. Her last album from the eighties, Who Was That Stranger,” released in 1988 and with this she stopped making solo records until 2004.
In 1993, she stepped back into the music with an album titled Honky Tonk Angels, on which she worked with Dolly Parton and Tammy Wynnete. The album was a major success for the trio and was certified gold with over 800,000 copies sold in the United States alone. In 2004, she released her long awaited album Van Lear Rose, which was produced by her close friend Jack White of The White Stripes. Jack also gave backing vocals and played guitar on this record.
Over the course of her successful career, Lynn has been awarded with several awards including multiple Grammy Awards, American Music Awards, and Academy of Country Music Awards among others. In 1998, Lynn was formally inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Country Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1999.
