In 1992 and 1994, she was awarded the Juno Award for the ‘Best Roots/Traditional Album’ for her albums 'The Visit' and 'The Mask and the Mirror'. She has also been awarded a Billboard Music Award in 1997, for international achievement and has been nominated for a Grammy Award twice. Loreena McKennitt has sold above fourteen million records all over the world. As the superstar performs in your town, make sure to attend the concert.
Born in Manitoba and raised in Ontario, young Loreena looked forward to becoming a veterinarian most probably due to the fact that her father raised cattle. However, she chose to go into music claiming that "I found that music chose me rather than me, it." She would later learn to play the harp and perform on the streets in order to raise money to record her first album. Loreena was fascinated by Celtic music and the style of her first album reflected that fact. Though her albums could be found in the folk section of many record stores, her style is more accurately described as "world" or new age. As she progressed further in her career, trips to European locales became routine as she studied the culture and environment of different communities to reflect their art styles in her music. She is known for putting a lot of thought into her music, going so far as to being influenced by prominent literary works such as Dante's Inferno and Shakespeare in writing her lyrics. She often plays instruments that she is familiar with on stage, which include the piano, accordion, and harp. Loreena McKennitt's music is all about culture, and she goes about it tastefully. Her style is one that is unforgettable and will leave you wanting more of this refined artist's handiwork.
From 1985 to 2012, she has released an astounding nineteen albums, including nine studio albums, five studio albums, two compilation albums and an EP. Her album 'The Visit' was certified Gold in both the US and Brazil, and certified four times Platinum in Canada. Her next two albums, "The Mask and Mirror" and "The Book of Secrets" received similar response from worldwide audiences with the former receiving Gold certification in Argentina and the US and three times Platinum certification in Canada. The former received Gold certification in Argentina and Germany, two times Platinum in the United States and four times Platinum in Canada.
Released in 2007, her live album "Nights from the Alhambra" was certified Gold in Germany, and released in 1995, her EP which is titled "A Winter Garden: Five Songs for the Season" was certified Gold in Canada. Although it's unusual for an independent artist to accumulate this many certifications gold and platinum certifications all around the world, Loreena McKennitt is a prime example of an artist who has achieved commercial success without yielding to mainstream values, staying true to her personal roots and the philosophy of her music.
