A Rock Star Is Born
Legions of young, middle-aged and working class women (and men) made Liz Phair’s debut album “Exile in Guyville” a mega hit. And all of a sudden the 26-year old rose from the ground and landed on the cover page of Rolling Stone with this headline “Liz Phair: A Rock and Roll Star Is Born”. The 18-song LP had the indie-rock gurus heaping praise on her and Phair became the first woman since Joni Mitchell in 1974 to be honored with the “Album of the Year” award.
Landing right in the middle of the cultural moment, Phair continued the legacy of women in rock as she pealed the layers off her life and sang her secrets. “Exile in Guyville” exploded from Chicago’s indie rock scene as Liz unapologetically presented a feminine version on sex, romance and relationships. Setting the rock world ablaze, the critics adored it though Liz did catch flak from some of her peers, including Steve Albini of Big Black who had objections with the content. She set out to prove that self-assured female artists could also flaunt their sexuality and make rock as raw and lustful as any male rock bands.
Making it to the Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list, the album is a classic fusion of hard rock, power pop, solo piano, folk, art rock and indie rock. The lyrics match the powerful music as they are vivid, bold and blunt. Nothing is off limits for Liz when it comes to her choice of words as evident in the singles “The Divorce Song” and “Flower”. Every track maintains a high level of quality and it became difficult for the singer to match its greatness in her future albums.
More About The Whip-Smart Singer/Songwriter
Raised in a wealthy family, Liz Phair was adopted by Dr. John Phair and Nancy. With an interest in arts she joined Oberlin College in Ohio and within a few months was drawn into the underground band scene. She ended up joining one herself and later started writing her own songs. She recorded her songs on tapes and “Girlysound” landed on the desks of many music makers during the 90s. Liz was encouraged to pursue music professionally and thus came her epic “Exile in Guyville”. Her later albums all earned her reasonable success but couldn’t touch the height of her first release.
Even though Liz Phair was unable to manage mega hits, she grew from album to album and showed maturity in her style and music arrangements. She had complete control over her sound and music, and was calling all the shots. Her last album “Funstyle” was self-released and presented her personal take on life and the world. Liz even rapped on the song “Bollywood” and all the other songs feature infectious melodies. Liz had been quiet since the release and finally we hear some noise from her end. Maybe after the tour she’d been inspired to come up with a new album. While we keep our fingers crossed, head out and buy those Liz Phair tickets. Liz needs to be reminded that her fans still love her and are anxiously waiting for some fresh music by her.
