Van Zandt’s Early Years
Little Steven’s name at birth was Steven Lento. He was born in Boston and later took his stepfather’s last name. Van Zandt was raised in New Jersey when his family shifted to Middletown Township, NJ, when Van Zandt was seven.
Like many great artists today, Van Zandt, too, was awestruck by The Beatles performance on the Ed Sullivan Show. George Harrison was his favorite Beatle and following in his footsteps, Van Zandt, too, learned to play the guitar. In addition to The Beatles and Rolling Stones, Van Zandt was impressed by Dave Clark Five and Ravi Shankar.
In his high school days, Van Zandt founded a few bands and joined others. These turned out to be brief stints. Van Zandt’s dream of making it big in the music industry remained elusive till he met the one.
When Van Zandt met Springsteen
Bruce Springsteen and Van Zandt met in the late 1960s. Both had been brought up in the music scene of Jersey Shore and immediately became good friends. The two performed together as part of Steel Mill band and later in the Bruce Springsteen band. When the E Street was founded in 1972, Van Zandt was not one of its founding members, but later joined the band in 1975.
The E Street Band Years
In the band’s formative years, Van Zandt was the main lead guitarist. Springsteen gives credit to Van Zandt for the signature guitar line in “Born to Run.” Van Zandt later left the band in 1984 only to rejoin in 1995. However, in his second stint with the band, Van Zandt plays background rhythm role due to Springsteen’s and Nils Lofgren’s position in the band as lead guitarists.
“Badlands,” “Land of Hope and Dreams,” “Long Walk Home,” “Two Hearts” and “Glory Days” are some of the biggest hits of the E Street band which feature Van Zandt.
Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul
Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul debuted at the Peppermint Lounge in July, 1982. Men Without Women became the band’s biggest hit album. Released in 1982, the album was labelled one of the ten best albums of the year by Time magazine. The album was a huge hit worldwide as it debuted at No.26 on Swedish Albums chart. One of the singles from the album “Forever” became a chartbuster in Norway, The Netherlands, in addition to the US.
In addition to performing with the E Street Band, and the Disciples of Soul, Van Zandt has been part of or collaborated with a variety of bands and artists, including Darlene Love, Jimmy Barnes, Meat Loaf, Artists United Against Apartheid, Gary U.S. Bonds, Ronnie Spector & The E Street Band, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes and others.
Little Steven, the Activist & Philanthropist
Van Zandt created a group called Artists United Against Apartheid. The group was created in 1985 and consisted of a wide variety of artists to raise awareness about Apartheid policy in South Africa. They also recorded an album, titled Sin City in which Bruce Springsteen, Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis and Peter Gabriel made contributions.
Van Zandt is also an honorary board member of Little Kids Rock, a nonprofit organization that promotes music education in disadvantaged public schools.
For his immense contribution to the world of music, Van Zandt was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an E Street Band member. If you want to see him perform live, then get these Little Steven tickets now.
