The band’s interesting line-up consists of four close friends from high school. As a lead vocalist there is Yukimi Nagano who is gaining considerable attention because of her unique vocals. The rest of the band comprises Fredrik Wallin as the bassist, Hakan Wirenstrand at the keyboard and Erik Bodin as the drummer. Together they produce ethereal music that supports Nagano’s distinctive vocals. The band’s name has a fascinating story to tell. Little Dragon was Nagano’s studio nickname which she earned because of her random tantrums during the recording sessions. It might be a little exaggerated but the band internalized the name and made it their identity mark.
Little Dragon started off as an underground band playing for small venues. In 2006 they debuted with their first single Test/4ever which was followed by another version Twice/Test in 2007. The song was made into a video directed by the award winning Swedish filmmaker Johannes Nyholm. It gained international exposure when it was featured on many shows and films including Grey’s Anatomy, Revenge, Being Mary Jane, Vampire Diaries and Magic Magic.
In 2007 Peacefrog Records, a British indie label, offered them a recording contract which led to the release of Little Dragon’s self-titled debut album in Japan and the UK. It contained some down tempo and soul tracks including Constant Surprises, After the Rain and Place to Belong. This album was followed by the release of Machine Dreams in 2009. It had songs in a similar genre but incorporated further exploration into trip hop and synthpop music. This album was released worldwide with songs including Looking Glass, Blinking Pigs and Thunder Love. Ritual Union is the band’s third studio album which was released in 2011 and garnered generally positive reviews. It debuted at the twenty-second position on the UK Albums Chart and became popular for its title track and the song Shuffle a Dream.
After much experimentation and deliberation, Little Dragon finally released an album in 2014 under the label Because Music. Taking inspiration from Janet Jackson’s slow jams, it shows the band’s intention to strongly express themselves. Nabuma Rubberband debuted at the fourteenth position on the UK Albums Chart. With hit songs like Klapp Klapp, Paris, Let Go and many others, it became the highest chart peaking Little Dragon album to date.
The band has collaborated with several well-known artists over the years. Some of the prominent ones include José González who is an expert Swedish indie folk singer, TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek, DJ Shadows, Raphael Saadiq, American rapper Big Boi and the Gorillaz. These partnerships have produced some really interesting songs and made Questlove, Pharrell Williams and OutKast their music fans.
Starting from the grassroots, the band has steadily grown into an internationally acclaimed group. They are constantly experimenting with the blends of electronic music, indie and R&B to produce dynamic songs and albums.
Nabuma Rubberband is a futuristic sounding album which has received many positive reviews. The band has hit the road on an adventurous tour to promote this album and offer some ultramodern songs to their increasing fan base. Little Dragons love to play at the parameters and constantly test the genre boundaries to expand their music horizons.
