With a career spreading over four decades, Lionel Richie has systematically rolled upon critics and acquired hordes of supporters with his extraordinary collection of hits.
Lionel Brockman Richie is a singer, musician, record producer and songwriter who was born in 1949, America. During his student life, Richie became a saxophonist and a singer with the band Commodores. Their initial albums as a band were more funky and focused on dance numbers. However, with time Lionel started writing more romantic songs such as ‘Three Times a Lady’, ‘Sail On’ and ‘Easy’. Towards the end of the 70’s decade, Lionel Richie started to accept offers to write songs for other singers. He arranged the song ‘Lady’ for Kenny Rodgers which made it to the top in the 80’s. The following year he sang a song for a movie by the name Endless Love with Diana Ross. The song reached the highest ratings in United States and United Kingdom. The popularity of this song encouraged Richie to pursue his solo career in 1982.
He came out with his debut self-titled solo-album, Lionel Richie blessing the industry with yet another spectacular hit, ‘Truly’. The other two songs to make to Top 5 were ‘My Love’ and ‘You Are’. The album itself scored number three position on top charts and marketed 4 million plus records. His second solo release, Can’t Slow Down got him two Grammy Awards consisting of Album of the Year Award. The album sold above eight million copies in the market ranking Lionel Richie at number one in the list of International Stars. The Caribbean style up-beat song of the album ‘All Night Long’ was advertised with colorful video and the song went up to number one position in no time.
Numerous more top ten songs were released by Richie including ‘Hero’ – the emotional love message that swept the hearts of the masses. Other hits of 1984 included ‘Stuck on You’ gaining position number three, ‘Running with the Nights’ on number seven and at number eight was ‘Penny Lover’.
Lionel Richie received Oscar Award for his hard work and dedication in producing the song ‘Say You, Say Me’ for the movie White Nights. Very much expectedly, the song stayed at the top position for several weeks getting it the status of number one song of the year 1985 by Billboard’s Hot 100 charts at the end of the year. Lionel produced yet another record breaking number in collaboration with Michael Jackson to collect charity for Africa. The song was called ‘We Are the World’.
Dancing on the Ceiling was another of his super duper hits of the year. It turned out to be the album that produced a line of successful songs – ‘Say You, Say Me’ at number one, ‘Dancing on the Ceiling’ at number two, ‘Ballerina’ staying at number seven and finally ‘Se La’ maintaining its position at number twenty. After laying a little low due to his father’s death, Richie came out with a greatest-hit collection in 1992 by the title Back To Front. He struck the music scene once again in 1996 with Louder than words still maintaining his musical inclination towards soul music.
Lionel’s releases in the 90’s did not reach the success heights as before. However, his recent work is picking up pace. Renaissance gained remarkable success in Europe whereas stayed at the average in United States. 2004 onwards, Richie came up with six Top 40 songs. In 2010 he created a remix version of ‘We are the World’ with Justin Bieber singing Richie’s original vocals. Richie is also known for his active participation in creating awareness for breast cancer activities. He raised 3.1 million dollars of donations for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
