Lily Tomlin is an American standup comedian from Detroit in Michigan who is also renowned an actress appearing on TV, film and theatre. She has been a part of American entertainment since her debut in 1965 and is known for her observational comedy mixed in with improv routines. She is also a theatrical producer and a writer, having been part of many stage productions. In the world of comedy, she is regarded as one of the best in America today with a legacy that few today can match. She originally started off as a comedian performing live to audiences through Lily Tomlin tickets before she went on to perform on TV in the show, Laugh-in. From then on, she appeared in a string of Broadway productions, movies, TV and comedy recordings earning many awards including Tony Awards, Grammy Awards, Emmy Awards and even an Academy Award nomination. Unlike many other comedians, her comedy is usually family friendly and is often compared to that of Eve Arden, Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett.
The Academy Award nominated Lily Tomlin grew up in Detroit as the daughter of a factory worker and a housewife. She then graduated from the CassTechnicalHigh School in 1957 and went on to study at the WayneStateUniversity where she developed a fondness for performing arts and theatre. She then went on to start performing standup comedy routines in venues in Detroit followed by venues in New York City. She also premiered on TV where she first appeared on The Mery Griffin Show in 1965. This was then followed by a role in Music Scene, an ABC Television series during 1969. She then became a part of Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In, a sketch comedy show airing on the NBC Channel. She became an instant hit on this show and soon became a regular member of the cast with her comic gags and sketches. These became famous and were soon seen eagerly by millions all over the US.
Lily Tomlin’s roles on Laugh-In included playing Ernestine, Edith Ann, Mrs. Judith Beasley, Susie the Sorority Girl and The Consumer Advocate Lady. During this time, she became one of the first female comedians to perform a male drag performance and also crossing races when she played the role of Pervis Hawkins, a black R&B soul singer. By the seventies, she was a regular performer on TV appearing on shows such as Saturday Night Live performing her character Ernestine. In the nineties, she brought her character Edith Ann to the spotlight again with three animated TV specials as well as an autobiography on the character.
Lily Tomlin also released a number of comedy albums with the first, This Is A Recording, released in 1971 and featuring her character Ernestine’s discussions with customers over the phone. This album ranked fifteenth on the Billboard Hot 200 and is today regarded as the Highest Charting Solo Album Ever by a solo female comedian. The album also earned her the Grammy Award for the Best Comedy Recording. It was followed by And That’s The Truth, which ranked high on the charts and earned her a Grammy Award nomination. She would release two more albums in the seventies including Modern Scream and Lily Tomlin On Stage. Both of these albums earned Grammy Award nominations. She is, even today, regarded as the female comedian with two of three Top Female Comedy Albums on the Billboard charts with third being an album by Joan Rivers.
