Lila Downs showed affinity for music at an early age and began with rancheras when she was eight years old and later sang Miriachi. Today, Downs is one of the most popular singers on the musical front. She has a plethora of hits to her credit; Engo miedo de quererte, Estrella oscura, La llorona, La linea, La cumbia del mole and Ojo de culebra are to name a few.
Lila Downs has many albums under her belt. Ofrenda was her debut venture having an ensemble of traditional songs of Oaxaca and Mexicowith lyrics in Sapnish, Mixtec and Zapotec. The album hit the shelves in 1994 and consisted of songs like Xquenda, La Sandunga, La Llorona, Sabor a Mi and Dios nunca muere. Although the album helped her achieve success but it was later that she became known internationally. With La Sadunga she took a big leap as the album opened doors to a wider fan base. It offered a pleasant combination of traditional music and jazz, bolero and blues. The success of the album paved the way for her participation in the music of the film Green Stones. Hence providing Downs with success in places like Spain, Mexico, United States, France, England and Germany while selling more than 500,000 copies worldwide. Post 1999’s release, the singer delivered another hit titled Tree of Life (Yutu Tata).
The album hit the shelves in 2000. It brought forth songs in Mexican languages such as Mixtec, Zapotec and Nahuatl. The album led to a tour consisting of a series of concerts in Latin America, Europe and the United States of America. The tour commenced in Mexico and came to an end in Spain. The year 2001 saw the release of a new album called Border/La linea which for the first time featured a bunch of English songs. The album included musical styles such as Traditional folk music, rock, chilena and hip hop. Border hit the 7th spot on "Top Charts" of world music. Mi Corazon me recuerda, La Llorona, Medley: Patures of Plenty/This Land is Your Land/Land and Coraznoncito Tirano are some of the popular tracks from the album. Then came One Blood/Una sangre, Lila Downs’ one of the most successful albums to date. Thus earning her a Grammy Award for the Best Album of World Music. The 2004’s release dominated the charts in the US, Mexico, Spain, UK, Germany and France.
Again Downs won the hearts of many as she brought in a number of genres such as son jarocho, jaz, rock and folk. The album also contained some traditional songs such as La Bamba, Viborita and La Cucaracha. Her next venture spawned the biggest hit; La cumbia del mole. The single swept the top spot on various charts. The album titled La Cantina came out in 2006 and included a variety of genres such as pop, rock, northern, hip hop and cumbia. Shake Away/Ojo de Culebra released in 2008 featuring songs like Little Man, Black Magic Woman, Silent Thunder, Perro Negro and Justice. 2011’s Pecados y Milagros/Sins and Miracles is one of her latest offerings.
