Who Are The Temptations?

The pioneers of psychedelic soul, The Temptations are among the oldest R&B groups around today. They have been part of the industry since the ‘60s and have cemented their place among the best in the business. Currently led by the only original member of the quintet, Otis Williams, the band is known for its signature sound which has resulted in hits like, Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me), My Girl and Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone. All of these songs became such huge successes that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame included them in its list of the, ‘500 Greatest Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.’ Moreover, they also have fourteen R&B and three Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles to their credit.

In 1989, The Temptations entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, earning one of the highest honors in the music industry. Considering the level of success of they have enjoyed over the course of their iconic journey and the kind of impact their music has made, Rolling Stone placed them at the sixty eighth spot in its list of the, ‘100 Greatest Artists of All Time.’ The group also received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.

The Famous records

Starting their journey in 1964, The Temptations' debut studio album, ‘Meet the Temptations’ wasn't too successful on the charts but it received a lot of critical acclaim. A year later, they dropped double albums, ‘The Temptations Sing Smokey’ and ‘The Temptin’ Temptations.’ Both records peaked at the first spot on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The band then completed the decade by dropping six consecutive chart-topping studio efforts including, ‘Gettin’ Ready,’ ‘The Temptations with a Lot o’ Soul’ and ‘Cloud Nine.’ The last record from the list earned them their first Grammy Award

The Temptations continued to rule the music charts till the first half of the 70s. During that time, they came out with records like, ‘Psychedelic Shack,’ ‘Solid Rock,’ ‘All Directions,’ ‘Masterpiece’ and ‘A Song for You.’ Out of those records, ‘All Directions’ made it to the book, ‘1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.’ In 1976, the quintet put out its last studio LP titled, ‘The Temptations Do the Temptations.’

The Life and Times of The Temptations

A new musical, Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations, on the band's journey debuted in 2017.
