Lewis Black was born in 1948 in Maryland to Jeannette, a teacher by profession and Sam Black, a mechanical engineer and an artist. He attended Springbrook High School and graduated in 1966. Later, he took admission in the University of Maryland. He then moved to the University of North Carolina and studied playwriting. He earned an MFA degree in 1977.

Black started his career as a playwright and began to assist director Rand Foerster in New York. From the year 1981 till 1989, he worked with him and the music director, Rusty Magee. He also wrote the musical the Czar of Rock and Roll along with Rusty. The debut of the musical was held in 1990 at the Alley Theatre. Later, he quit that job and decided to work as a comedian in television and films.

Black made his first appearance in a comedy special on Comedy Central Presents. Later in the year 2002, he was selected for another major role in a special comedy series called Taxed Beyond Belief. Black has won various awards including two Grammys.  He was conferred with the American Comedy Award in 2001.
