Lea Salonga is also famous as an actress, best known for playing the main role in the famous musical, Miss Saigon, for which she won many awards including Tony Awards, Olivier Awards, Drama Desk Awards, Theatre World Awards and Outer Critics Circle Awards. She has also played roles on Les Miserables on Broadway, the first Asian to be cast as Fantine and Eponine in this iconic musical. She has also been the singing voice of Princess Jasmine in Aladin and Fa Mulan in both the Mulan animated movies. For this, she was honored as a Disney Legend by Walt Disney.
In 1978, Lea Salonga debuted onto the professional stage while seven years old, starring in The King and I. Following this, she played the lead role in Annie and then went on play roles in famous productions of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Rose Tattoo, Fiddler on the Roof, The Sound of Music, Paper Moon, The Goodbye Girl, and The Fantasticks. She recorded her first album while ten years old, an album titled as Small Voices which was certified gold soon after release. Her second album was released in 1988, titled Lea.
Lea Salonga also began hosting her own TV show, as well as being a member of the show That’s Entertainment by German Moreno. She played roles in a number of movies, including Captain Barbell, Ninja Kids, Like Father Like Son, Pik Pak Boom and Captain Barbell. She played with the likes of Stevie Wonder and Menido and at a young age, received the prestigious Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences Award nomination for the Best Actress, the Philippines equal to the Oscars.
In 1989, Lea Salonga took part in auditions for the role of Kim in Miss Saigon, for which she was instantly selected, while just seventeen years old. She would go on to win many awards for the role, playing the role for many years on Broadway, London’s West End and many stages all over the world. She was also awarded with the Presidential Award of Merit from then Philippines president, Corazon Aquino. In 1993, she performed live at the Academy Awards, singing a song from the Aladdin movie. She released her first international album the same year, which went multi-platinum and sold more than three million copies.
Lea Salonga has released many more albums since then, many of which have been certified multi-platinum. She has also played roles in many movies, TV shows and theatrical productions. She is the recipient of many awards with some of her musicals and plays regarded as the best by the likes of Time magazine. She has also received Grammy Award nominations and performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, as well as at the fifteenth Asian Games, where many saw her live with Lea Salonga tickets.
