A true Texan, Gatlin grew up listening to gospel and country music. At a very young age, Larry along with his 2 brothers, started singing on local radio stations and their local church. As he grew up, Larry made up his mind of becoming a singer and auditioned for a gospel band ‘The Imperials’ and was immediately selected. He was spotted by the legendary country music star Dottie West who landed Larry with a job in Nashville as a background singer for Kris Kristofferson. Dottie West was also inspired by his song writing skills and compositions. She even recorded 2 of his compositions that turned out to be huge successes in Dottie’s career.

With the prospects of becoming a singer himself, Larry Gatlin decided to go solo and was signed by Monument Records. His first album was ‘The Pilgrim’ but unfortunately the album turned out to be a disaster but Larry never lost his hope and was confident that he would succeed some day. His next album was released and the single ‘Delta Dirt’ reached the top 20 country hits. 1975 was the year when the country music star got a taste of super stardom and his own composition ‘Broken lady’ acquired the top position in the hot country songs chart. The single was such a huge success that the country music star even received a Grammy award for it.

After the huge success of his single, Larry decided to bring his brothers in the music industry and ‘Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin Brothers’ band was formed. The success was taken forward and Larry’s next album with his brothers ‘Straight Ahead’ smashed the charts with its songs taking the top positions in hot country songs chart again and Larry landed himself the prestigious top vocalist of the year award by the academy of country music that year. With continuous successes coming their way, the Gatlin brothers’ next big hit came with ‘take me to your lovin’ place’ and ‘what are we doin’ lonesome.’ Peaking the charts again, Larry Gatlin with his brothers was on a winning streak and became the hottest singing sensation in the 1980’s. They remained in the top 10 bands throughout that era.

The 1980’s saw Larry Gatlin and his brothers on the pinnacle of success, a success that no one was able to match but as the 90’s started, the Gatlin brothers were separated and Larry was on his own way. He wanted to try out something new and so he graced ‘the will Rogers follies’, a Broadway production, with his acting skills. He also starred as himself in ‘big dreams & broken hearts: The Dottie West story’; a TV-movie on the life of Dottie West. Being the superbly talented man that he was, Larry also wrote a memoir ‘All the gold in California’ and also tried out his hand at commentating at Fox news network.

A singer, composer, actor, commentator and a writer; Larry Gatlin is a truly gifted personality. But his most outstanding talent was his ability to sing which resulted in some of the most beautiful songs of all time. He also helped out his brothers become the stars that they are today. With the talents of the 3 brothers combined, no one could stop them in the 80’s. Larry Gatlin’s is on tours all over the country and you would not want to miss the true American country music. Larry has been one of those singers that have continued the traditional country music style and taken it a step forward. Youngsters, adults, elderly people; everyone can enjoy Larry’s concerts.
