La India began her career in early adolescence as a member of a Latin freestyle group called TKA. She remained with the group until its second album Come Get My Love, after which she left TKA and shelled under Reprise Records. The record company made her into the Latin Madonna; soon she released her first solo studio album Breaking Night. However, the singer chose not to go towards this genre, in turn changed her route towards salsa music.
The singer got a chance to work under John Benitez a.k.a. Jellybean. This apprenticeship was the start of her career as a house music artist. Under Jellybean's direction, she re-recorded his song ‘Dancing on the Fire' which succeeded more than the original number. Once India became popular in the house music circles more and more doors opened to her. She got a chance to collaborate and work with names like Louie Vega and Kenny Gonzalez. As a part of this trio she sung two house anthems 'I Can't Get No Sleep' and 'When You Touch Me'. These songs were later featured in Masters At Work a 1993 release by Cutting Records.
India’s salsa career began in 1992 when she released her first salsa album Llego La India produced by Eddie Palmier. The album was a hit and was also celebrated as the ‘Best Salsa Album of the Year’ followed. The album also earned India a nomination in the 1993 Lo Neustro Awards in the category of the Best Performer.
The artist further mastered her salsa and house music skills by releasing another house-music single with Vega in 1994. Soon after the release this album titled Love and Happiness became a hit because of ‘Dicen Quo Soy’ a single featured on the album. It was a Billboard hit, and an acclaimed two-fold gold-certified single. India also teamed up with Marc Anthony for the duet titled ‘Vivor Lo Nuestro’, which became a part of the album Combinacion Perfecta.
La India further brought in more spirited music by releasing 'Jazzin'. This 1996 collaboration with Tito Puente was mix bag of Latin and mainstream pop. Later in the same year, she sang for Voces Unidas, an album dedicated to the Summer Olympics of 1996. The album featured songs of a number of famous artists, however India’s single 'Banderas' was one of the best on the album. She teamed up with Celia Cruz the Queen of Salsa for 'La Voz de la Experienca'. The single 'Sobre el Feugo' was the first single that she sang with Kevin Ceballo and won her a Grammy nomination.
In 1999, Sola became her first album to get commendable critic response. Walking into the new millennium with more zest and energy than ever, the artist kept delivering musical hits one after the other. She also received her second Grammy nomination for the single ‘Seduceme’ featured on Latin Songbird: Mi Alma y Corazon. This single was a No.1 hit on US Billboard Hot Latin Tracks and Latin charts. Her album 'Soy Differente' earned her the Best Tropical Album of the Year and Latin Dance Club Play Track of the Year Awards in 2007. She also paired up with Gloria Estefan for a beautiful duet titled '90 Millas'.
Apart from recording and releasing some brilliant solo and collaborative songs, India tried hands on both live salsa and new house. Once India went live, she was turned out be more versatile and talented than ever. Her concerts in US and especially Puerto Rico were sold out. La India tickets were very hard to find.
In 2005, India became a part of a memorable tribute to Selena Quintanilla-Perez. However after this she became relatively inactive in the recording scene. She made a comeback with her single 'Estupida' and her ninth album 'Unica' in 2010. Fans were delighted to hear a fresher new side of her music. She went back to duets landing with Isaac Delgado in 2011 for a brand new house track 'Tacalacateo'. India was also featured on UNITY: The Latin Tribute to Michael Jackson.
La India will be promoting her latest release on this tour. Grab your tickets to watch her live, out and loud. Enjoy!
