Singer, actor and songwriter Kris Kristofferson has made waves with his work throughout his illustrious career. Undoubtedly one of the greatest musicians ever, Kristofferson may be over 80 but his love and passion for the art is as intense as ever.
Born in Texas to a military family, he studied creative writing at California’s Pomona College. The Brownsville native graduated Phi Beta Kappa before earning a Rhodes scholarship which took him to Oxford University to study literature.
Boxing and rugby were Kristofferson’s other pursuits at that prestigious seat of learning. He kept on writing songs during this time. Following his graduation from Oxford, he had a stint in the army as a helicopter pilot before moving to Nashville to pursue music full-time.
Life in the Music City
After initial struggles, Kristofferson struck it big as a songwriter on the country music scene during the 1970s. It was during this time that he wrote the hit singles “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” “Sunday Morning Coming Down” and “For the Good Times.”
These evergreen numbers, all chart-topping hits for other artists, pretty much redefined the art of songwriting in country music. In 1970, Kristofferson released his eponymous debut album which broke into the top 10 of the US Billboard Country chart.
It was also the beginning of four straight top-10 hits. This run culminated with the number 1 hit Jesus Was a Capricorn. All in all, the Golden Globe Award winner released 9 albums during this eventful decade.
The Highwaymen and Work on the Big Screen
By now, Kristofferson’s fame as a songwriter was at its peak and even Hollywood came calling. He starred in the popular 1976 film A Star Is Born alongside Barbra Streisand. Kristofferson won a Golden Globe for “Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy” for his role. The movie has since had a remake with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in the lead roles.
In 1985, the former Army Captain joined forces with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash to form the country music band The Highwaymen. This super-group featuring some of the biggest names in country music played a key role in the development of the subgenre “Outlaw Country.”
Honors and Accolades
To date, Kristofferson has released more than 30 albums. These include his solo records as well as live albums, compilations and collaborations with other artists. He is a Country Music Hall of Fame inductee as well as a recipient of the coveted Johnny Mercer Award conferred by the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Moreover, Kristofferson has also picked up nominations at the BAFTAs and the Academy Awards. The upcoming tour will be a great opportunity for you to enjoy all of his greatest hits. Get your Kris Kristofferson & The Strangers tickets now to enjoy a memorable evening.
