Cameron Matthew Followill (lead guitarist, backing vocalist) is the fourth member of the band being the cousin of the brothers. The members of the band are known by their middle names rather than the first given names.

Initially Kings of Leon included an upbeat range of southern rock and blues in their music forms but then they slowly embraced a diverse array of genres apart from a more arena rock or alternative sound. Their early success was in UK where nine of their singles found a place in the Top 40. Other noteworthy achievements include three of the band’s albums topping the top five of the UK Albums Chart apart from two BRIT Awards in 2008. “Because of the Times” was their third album that also topped the UK Charts. The band finally achieved chart success in their country USA with the release of “Only by the Night” in September 2008. The singles of the album like “Notion”, “Sex on Fire” and “Use Somebody” all topped the Hot Modern Rock Tracks while the album itself was granted platinum status in USA, being their first effort to achieve such a distinction in their home country. It was also certified Platinum nine-times in Australia being the best selling album of 2008 in the country.

The three brothers frequently traveled across Southern United States with their father when they were young. Their father was a Church preacher and it was during the services attended by the boys that they occasionally enlisted to bang on some drums. Their father resigned from the Church in 1997 and it was then they moved to Nashville, thus embracing the rock music along with the associated lifestyle which they had to abstain from previously. Songwriter Angelo Petraglia met them there who counseled the boys with their songwriting skills. He also introduced them to the musical influences of The Clash, Thin Lizzy and the Rolling Stones. Finally, Caleb and Nathan signed with RCA Records six months later and they were directed to engage more members for the band before they embarked on their career. Younger brother Jared and cousin Matthew joined the duo and the name Kings of Leon was decided in tribute to Caleb, Nathan and Jared’s father whose name was Leon.

Kings of Leon released their first EP, the Holy Roller Novocaine in February 2003. The project provided them with a considerable platform and they launched their debut album next, titled “Youth and Young Manhood”. Rolling Stone magazine credited the album with a 4/5 star which was released in UK in July 2003 and in USA in August of the same year. It did not win critical acclaim in the local market but became a sensation in Ireland and the UK. The success of the album won Kings of Leon a tour with U2 and The Strokes.

“Aha Shake Heartbreak” (2004) was the band’s second album with such hit singles like “King of the Rodeo”, “Four Kicks” and “The Bucket”. “Because of the Times” (2007) and “Only by the Night” (2008) were their third and fourth albums.
