Who are King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard?
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard formed in 2010 in Melbourne, Victoria. With Stu Mackenzie on vocals, Ambrose Kenny-Smith on vocals and harmonica, Cook on vocals and guitar, Joey Walker on vocals and guitar, Eric Moore on drums and percussion and Michael Cavanagh on drums and percussion, the band quickly managed to make a name for itself in the music industry. The group’s unique blend of garage rock, surf music and psychedelic rock, combined with their outstanding live performances, helped establish them as a force to be reckoned with.
The Music of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard
The group from Australia released its first studio album in 2012. The album, called 12 Bar Bruise was self-recorded using non-traditional recording techniques. One interesting technique that the band is known to have used for the recording of this album includes placing multiple iPhones around the room, with Mackenzie singing into one of them.
After the mild success of their debut album, the group began work on its sophomore album, Eyes Like the Sky. This album, released in 2013, deals with various themes such as native Americans, gun fight and outlaws. Talking about what influenced the themes of this album, Mackenzie said, "I love Western films. I love bad guys and I love Red Dead Redemption. Oh, and I love evil guitars".
As King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard began riding high on the wave of success, they released another album, called Float Along – Fill Your Lungs in 2013. With a slight change in their sound, moving towards a mellower feel, the band managed to expand their fan base even further.
As King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard continued to explore their horizons, they released their fifth album, I’m in Your Mind Fuzz, in 2014. This album was vastly different from its predecessors, mainly because of its themes of mind control.
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard then released their albums Quarters! And Paper Mache Dream Balloon, both in 2015, with the latter being described as a “concept-less concept album”.
Soon after, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard was all geared up for the release of its eight studio album, Nonagon Infinity. The album was released in 2016 and was described by the lead singer as a “never-ending album”. This album was very well-received by the critics with Stuart Berman from Pitchfork writing that the album "yields some of the most outrageous, exhilarating rock 'n' roll in recent memory”. The album also helped the group bag its first ARIA Award, in the category of the Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album.
2017 – The Five Album Year
2017 was a very happening year for the group, as they released an impressive five studio albums – within one year! The first one, Flying Microtonal Banana was released in February, followed by Murder of the Universe in June. After this, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard released Sketched of Brunswick East in August and Polygondwanaland in November 2017.
Eventually, the band informed its fans about the release of the much awaited fifth studio album in 2017. Gumboot Soup, the last album to be released in the year was for the songs that didn’t work in any of the rest of the four records, or they didn’t fit into any of those categories that well, or they came together slightly after when those records came together”.
