"one of the founders of metal core". The band, Killswitch Engage rose out of the ashes of two different bands Aftershock and Overcast. In fact the name "Killswitch" was to signify how this new band represented a departure from the old school traditions. Just like a 'kill switch' is used to immediately shut off machinery in case of an emergency, followed by a fresh start, the band left the old style of metal and created their band new sound. The dissolution of the old band and the formation of this new one represented the same for the band members. Moreover, it also represented a total departure from their past legacy and launching of a totally new and fresh musical direction.
Former members of the two bands got together initially just for fun, but soon discovered that they had great chemistry. The founding members of the band were the Overcast bassist Mike D'Antonio, who teamed up with Aftershock's guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz. Soon they recruited their former band mates to complete the band. Aftershock guitarist Joel Stroetzel was to lead the band's ferocious guitar attack. Former Nothing Stays Gold vocalist, Jesse Leach joined the band as the front-man and the vocalist.
Killswitch Engage started off their recording careers with a self-titled album. The album may not have been a big hit but was able to catch the attention of many record executives. The album got the band a record deal with Roadrunner records. They released their second studio album Alive or Just Breathing in 2001. The album did very well commercially and reached 37th position on the Heat seekers chart.
The band expanded their head count by becoming a five member band and released their first relatively successful video. They faced a lot of problems when they were forced to replace their singer with Howard Jones in 2002. The former singer had started struggling with depression. After Jones left, the band struck it big with their 2004 album titled 'The End of Heartache'.
The album was a surprise commercial success, going gold multiple times in the US. It sold more than half a million copies and did very well reaching the 21st spot on the Billboard 200 charts. The title track from the album, The end of Heartache won a Grammy nomination and the band in turn won much critical acclaim.
Since, the success of The end of Heartache , the band has released more studio albums and sold more than a million copies overall since their first release. This is indeed a great achievement as selling such a large volume of albums in a niche genre like metal core is indeed very challenging. Only a handful of metal bands in the past have been able to successfully drive such album sales. These include such great metal legends as Metallica and AC/DC.
Killswitch have earned their reputation as one of the big boys of metal history. Their last two albums both peaked at the Billboard top ten. 2009's self-titled album as well as 2013's Disarm the Descent have carried forward Killswitch's march towards mainstream success. The band has earned high praise from both fans and critics alike. The hype around this year’s nationwide summer tour of the band proves that the band is stronger than ever.
