Kenny Wayne Shepherd is a singer, guitarist and a songwriter from America. He is known as a musician who works in the blues, country blues and blues-rock genres of music. This artist has had his fair share of success since the beginning. He has made his mark and is still going strong. So watch out for his live performances very soon, in and near your vicinity.
Kenny Wayne Shepherd was born on the 12th of June, in 1977, in Louisiana. He did not attend any music schools or learn music in any way. In fact he learnt it on his own, he was his own teacher as well as student. The fact that his father was his home town’s radio celebrity as well as worked as a promoter of concerts and had a huge collection of music influenced him a great deal. It might be due to this that his love for music began to flourish from a very young age. He got his first ever guitar around the time he was only three years of age, when his grandmother bought him one of those plastic guitars to play with. According to Kenny Wayne Shepherd, he started to take guitar playing seriously by the time he was only seven years old. He was greatly inspired and enthralled by the singer Stevie Ray Vaughan, whom he met at one of the concert’s his father was promoting. He took up cassettes of Albert Lee, Muddy Waters and Stevie Ray Vaughan from his father’s collection of music. His course of action consisted of him learning to play one note at a time. He constantly played and reminded the cassettes to practice the notes till he had perfected them.
Kenny Wayne Shepherd was even invited onstage by Bryan Lee at the age of thirteen. After proving his talent and capabilities, he took up music as his profession. He recorded many demo tapes and also made a video, which was captured at his first ever performance at a music festival, the Red River Revel Arts Festival, in his home town of Shreveport. His video created quite an impression on Irving Azoff, the chief of Giant Records. He signed up Kenny Wayne Shepherd for a deal to record more than one album with the company. From the year 1995, with the release of his debut album, “Ledbetter Heights”, his work started getting him worldwide recognition and soon he was one of the most popular musicians of those times. Seven of his singles were able to reach the Top 10 and created history with his second album in 1996, “Trouble Is…” which became Billboard Blues Charts longest running album ever. During that time he started a long running partnership with Noah Hunt, a vocalist. His song “Blue on Black”, which was also written by him, had the vocals by Noah Hunt and is till date considered to be one of his most amazing songs ever. It reached the number 1 spot on the Rock Charts and stayed there for almost 17 successive weeks.
Kenny Wayne Shepherd is just in his thirties and he has already sold millions of copies of his albums. Several of his songs have topped the charts and became iconic because of the singer’s unique style and take on the blue genre of music. He released several more albums, “Live On” in 1999, “The Place You’re In” in 2004 and “10 Days Out” in 2007. His song “How I Go” took him to new heights as Guitar World placed him on the list of Blues guitarist and that to right after the legends Eric Clapton and B.B King. Other songs like “Never Lookin’ Back”, “Cryin’ Shame”, “Show Me the Way Back Home” and “Who’s Gonna Catch You Now?”, also became extremely popular. But along with being a musician, Kenny Wayne Shepherd proved to just as extraordinary at writing songs. Some of his masterpieces include Bessie Smith’s song “Backwater Blues”, “Year Blues” of The Beatles and Albert King’s song “Oh, Pretty Woman”. He has received numerous accolades and awards, including getting five Grammy Award nominations and winning Billboard Music Awards, Orville H. Gibson Awards and Blues Music Awards twice.
