A Star with Genuine Charisma
Kehlani Ashley Parrish is a young American singer and songwriter who is known to the world as just Kehlani. At 22 years of age, Kehlani has accomplished a lot, and she still remains humble. Born in Oakland, California, Kehlani was raised by her aunt who was an avid music fan. She grew up listening to the likes of Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill, and Erykah Badu, as well as a variety of other neo soul and R&B artists that her aunt listened to.
Up until the time she was in junior high, Kehlani nursed dreams of becoming a Julliard trained dancer. However, after sustaining a knee injury, she had to change course.
After deciding that she wanted to actively pursue singing, Kehlani achieved early fame as a member of the teen pop group, Poplyfe. The band was a finalist on the popular show America’s Got Talent, and therefore gained a lot of exposure.
Budding Fame and Solo Success
When America’s Got Talent finished, Kehlani left Poplyfe. She spent many months trying to find the direction she wanted to move in but things weren’t clicking.
Her fortunes began turning when she released her first single on SoundCloud called ANTISUMMERLUV. The song caught the attention of Nick Cannon, who set Kehlani up with studio time as well as an apartment in LA.
In 2014 she released her first mixtape, Cloud 19. The album was well received and earned a spot on Complex's "50 Best Albums of 2014.”
The following year, she released another mixtape, You Should Be Here. This was followed by a North American promotional tour which completely sold out. This mixtape was so well received that Billboard referred to it as the "year's first great R&B album". The album also debuted at the number 5 spot on the US Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.
2016 was another big year for Kehlani. She was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album for her second mixtape.
Although she hasn’t been in the music business for very long, Kehlani has collaborated with some of the hottest artists on the scene such as Zayn Malik and Chance the Rapper, and has released some of the best R&B music in years. She has proven that she can write powerful music and bring something new and fresh to the table.
The SSS World Tour
In January 2017, Kehlani is gearing up to release her first full length studio album called SweetSexySavage. A number of singles from the album have already been released including "CRZY," "Distraction" and "Advice".
