Keane, previously known as The Lotus Eaters, is launching what may become the music that defines the decade. Winner of numerous awards in UK including the Ivor Novello Award for Composer of the Year to band member Tim Rice-Oxley, and Spain's Premios Onda Award for Best International Band, Keane has successfully created their one of a kind sound. Keane is a piano rock band that has been compared with Cold Play and The Fray for a lyric approach to rock, one that emphasizes the piano and exploits its potential in creating a soft yet full, original sonic effect.
Keane is an innovator of sorts: Their clean-cut stage persona, whimsical but non-rebellious video concepts and the serious pursuit of a deeper, more personal, less superficial sound, all define the sensibilities of the new generation. Keane's most recent tour is for their album Perfect Symmetry, which has been as much of a commercial success as the previous albums. Perfect Symmetry won the Q Award for best album as well as for the track "Perfect Symmetry."
Keane's other albums are Hopes and Fears and Under the Iron Sea. Both have not only enjoyed high sales worldwide but also won many prestigious awards, including Q Award for Best Album (Hopes and Fears), the Brit Award for Best Album as well as the BRIT Breakthrough Act (Hopes and Fears), GQ Award for best band for Under the Iron Sea. A very flattering ovation came from the readers of Q Magazine who voted Hopes and Fears as #13 and Under the Iron Sea as #8 among the best British albums ever, besides albums by the Beatles, Radiohead, Oasis and other internationally acclaimed bands.
Keane is known as "the band with no guitars" because unlike most other bands, they do not rely on the guitar, electric or acoustic, which makes for a distinctive style. Their newer works incorporate the acoustic guitar in addition to saxophone and violins, but their typical sound is predominantly piano with delay and distortion effects that provide an appealing novelty, an unusual sound for the piano. The choice of the piano as a rock instrument sets Keane apart and makes their dabbling in hip hop ("Dirtylicious") and house ("Tyderian") even more interesting. Keane has given benefit concerts for war children. Their songs "Is it any Wonder" and " A Bad Dream" are based on the theme of war. They also support the Make Poverty History foundation.
Currently Keane comprises three main band members, with guest participation from other musicians during tours. Time Rice-Oxley is the primary songwriter, pianist and keyboardist. Tom Chaplin is the lead vocalist who also plays the organ, keyboards and guitar, and Richard Hughs is the percussionist. Keane is exciting a fresh interest in rock among people who had had enough of the same old stuff being rehashed. With songs such as "Spiraling," " The Lovers are Losing," "and "Nothing in My Way," Keane has yet again shown the magic of their ever inventive, solid musicianship and their fans are not surprised.
