KCON 2012 took place at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine, California. The line-up featured B.A.P, Nu’est, 4Minute, Exo-M, G.NA and VIXX, many of them performed in the United States for the first time. It attracted more than ten thousand people and received rave review about artist’s performances and audiences’ interest. Creating an incredible thrill and unbelievable vibe among the attendees, it proved to be a great experience for everyone. The Orange County register described KCON 2012 as “a daylong K-Pop invasion at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre”.
KCON 2013 took place at Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. Hosted by the number one K-Pop chart show M COUNTDOWN, that year’s line-up included EXO, TEENTOP, 2AM, F(x) and others. Formed in 2012, EXO perform their music in Korean and Mandarin, have released one studio album XOXO and one EP Mama with million hits worldwide and have won more than 20 awards since their debut performance. TEENTOP consists of six members and have released four EPs, three single albums, two studio albums and one compilation albums, all of them being commercially successful and earning the band several awards and recognition worldwide. South Korean girl group, F(x) is known for their electronic music, consistent sounds and two studio albums and two EPs that hit number one on pop charts. 2AM is a four member ballad band renowned for their award-winning debut song This Song, commercially successfully albums, extremely popular tours and numerous awards and nominations.
Besides the exciting and electrifying k-pop concert, the convention included celebrity panels, fan workshops, autograph sessions, contests and amazing food. Celebrity panels gave fans a chance to engage with their favorite idols, ask them what they wanted and get pictures with them. With panel discussions, fans were able to take a peek into what is bringing K-pop to US and what it takes to make a K-pop hit. Workshops gave attendees a chance to learn from professional KCON instructors and master the K-pop looks in fashion, make-up and style. Variety show inspired games, K-pop trivia, arcade games from Korea and many other surprising events were planned for the attendees to spend a fun-filled day full of entertainment.
It was an absolute delight to attend the convention, talk to the Koreans, know their humorous and realistic view of Korea, and get to know their music and culture. For any fan of Asian pop culture or who want to give it a try for the first time, this festival was the best thing to attend.
