After attending Yehudi Menuhin School, where she was taught by the likes of Barbara Kerslake, Marcel Ciampi, Nadia Boulanger, Ravel specialist, Vlado Perlemuter, and many others as well, Stott got admission at the Royal College of Music with Kendall Taylor. In the year 1978, Kathryn Stott achieved the fifth position in the Leeds International Piano Competition. This marked the turning point in her life, as this led to the launch of her extremely successful career as a solo pianist.
 
Kathryn Stott made her debut as a solo piano artist in the year 1978, when she performed at the Purcell Room in London, United Kingdom. After that memorable performance, there has been no looking back for this young musician. She has performed all over the world, in places such as Australia, the United States, Asia, throughout Europe and various more places as well. Her concert repertoire includes chamber music and solo piano music. One of her most unique aspects is that she always performs from a score. She has a deep interest in English music, and has worked on it many times. She has released a series of recordings by artists such as William Walton, John Ireland, George Lloyd and Frank Bridge. The recordings have been described as distinguished and have gone on to become highly popular with the critics as well as the audience.
 
Kathryn Stott has produced several types of music, and is particularly known for her love for French music, along with the English. One of her greatest inspirations include the French musician, Gabriel Faure, whose music she has recorded to critical acclaim. Another field of music she enjoys includes contemporary classical music. She has given various performances of contemporary classical music, including concertos by Graham Fitkin's Circuit (with Noriko Ogawa), Michael Nyman's The Piano Concerto, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and many others as well. Ever since the 1990s, Stott has also been performing tango and many other Latin dance music, which she describes as abrasive and tender at the same time, along with being hard to place and primitive.
 
Kathryn Stott gives numerous concert performances with her cellist Yo Yo Ma, who is her long time collaborator. After meeting him in the year 1978, they developed a great relationship as co-workers, and have collaborated on numerous songs. The pair also goes on tours together frequently, and have created countless joint recordings, such as the Obrigado Brazil, which went on to win Grammy Awards, both in the year 1999 and 2004. One of her other popular collaborations with Yo Yo Ma was titled Soul of the Tango, which also went on to become extremely successful. Apart from Yo Yo Ma, Stott has also collaborated with various other artists, such as pianist Noriko Ogawa, violinist Janine Jansen, cellists Christian Poltéra, Natalie Clein and Truls Mørk and countless more musicians as well. She is now a teacher at the Chetham's School of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, and has arranged numerous music concerts and festivals series.
