It wasn’t until 1987 that Kadim Al Sahir got an opportunity to show off his talent to the world. His first song video which he made with a friend’s help got aired on the Iraqi television. It was called "Ladghat El Hayya" which means a snake bite in English. Due to its controversial content, the song was threatened to be banned unless Kadim changed some of the lyrics. His refusal resulted in its ban, which worked in the artist’s favor as it gained a lot of popularity after that. Following the scandal, Kadim Al Sahir was approached for live performances and concerts. He performed live all over the Persian Gulf and signed a contract with Kuwaiti label, Music Box and Al-Nazaer.
Kadim Al Sahir went on to release a single "Obrat Al Shal" which became a hit song in Iraq. It was a pop song which was liked by the masses, making him a star within a few weeks after its release. In 1989, he toured the US for the first time. Having established himself as a pop artist, Kadim once again turned to classical genre with his magnum opus, "La Ya Sadiki" which gained an instant success in the Arab classical scene.
