Hayward performed with local groups in clubs and dance halls, and through these he was able to earn enough money to buy a Gibson Guitar and a Vox amplifier. He was 15 at that time. He opened for The Hollies and Brian Poole and the Tremeloes with his group: All Things Bright. He later signed a songwriter contract at the age of 17 with Lonnie Donegon. Hayward replaced Denny lane, who had already planned to leave. Beginning by singing, they inspired repertoire of The Moodies 1964-1965 era. Hayward introduced himself with his song "Fly Me High" in 1967 but was not very successful with it, but he gave the band the a new sound and direction, with more originality than the usual R&B sound they had been already been producing. Hayward’s song "Leave This Man Alone" was featured on the Decca. Along with John Lodge and Pinder’s use of the mellotron, they earned fame and accomplishment, becoming one of pop music’s largest selling acts. Hayward composed the songs "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Nights In White Satin" in the album " Days of Future Passed" an album which went on to sell two million copies and taking the band on top of the UK charts three times.
Hayward made his way up In the band and set himself as the group’s main head during 1964-1974, being the most creative writer and composing the band’s most famous hits. These hits include " Tuesday Afternoon", "Never Comes the Day", "The Actor, "Lovely to See You", "Gypsy(Of a Strange and Distant Time), "It’s Up to You", "You Can Never Go Home", "Dawning is the Day", "The Story in Your Eyes" "New Horizons"," The Land Of Make-Believe and "Island". Out of these, "The Story in Your Eyes" was a US chart hit.
He wrote 20 of the groups 27 songs and also the UK no.2 hit "Question" along with "Voices in the Sky", "Driftwood", "The Voice", "Blue World" ,"Your Wildest Dreams" , "I Know You’re Out There Somewhere", "English Sunset", "and December Snow". He not only leaded his own compositons, but featured on other band mate songs such as "Dawn is A Feeling", written by Pinder, "Gimmie A Little Something", "Isn't Life Strange", "Candle of Life" (Lodge), "After You Came", "I'll Be Level With You", "The Spirit". "Nothing Changes" (Edge). Hayward’s brilliant songwriting, guitar playing and harmony singing brought much of the bands success since 1981.
The true number of album sales is not known due to disputes over lack of data from record track company data but the known total is 60 million. The period from 1967-74 was the time when their albums plus singles were topping charts in the UK, Us and France.
Hayward then, along with the rest of the band took a four year break but kept on working with John Lodge and their producer Tony Clarke to produce a 1975 hit "Blue Guitar" and an album named "Blue Jays". He worked solo in 1977 and produced his first solo album "Songwriter" which brought him international fame and success when he was featured on Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds concepts album, for his hits "Forever Autumn" and "The Eve of the War". He also took part in composing music for the 1987 BBC2’ science fiction series Star Cops, the film "Howling IV: The Original Nightmare" and the film "She". He also composed for an animated series called "The Shoe People".
