The Jungle Book is an exciting new musical adaptation of Rudyard Kiplings book by the same name, which became so popular that today it has also taken the form of an animation, live-action film, comics and theater. The Jungle Book was written by Rudyard Kipling, the famous English Nobel laureate, and published through magazines between 1893 and 1894. The storys protagonist Mowgli receives a most unexpected and unusual upbringing at the hand of the wolf family and other animals from the jungle. These include the Indian Wolf Akela, a black melanistic panther Bangheera, sloth bear Baloo, a monkey tribe of Bandar-log, a kite called Chil, a muskrat Chuchundra, a tailorbird Darzee, Father Wolf, Grey Brother, an Indian Elephant names Hathi, an Indian python Kaa, a common krait called Karait, a bat Mang, an Indian peacock called Mor, a male black Cobra Nag, Cobras mate Nagain, Mowglis mother wolf Raksha, an Indian mongoose Rikki-Tikka-Tavi, an Indian Jackal Tabaqui, a royal Bengal tiger Shere Khan, and a walrus Sea Vitch. Other animals include a Northen fur seal and cows.
The Jungle Book musicals have been produced many times earlier starting with a Hungarian team with composer Laszlo Des, lyricist Pal Bekes and Peter Geszti, and was first staged in Budapest in 1996. It was staged in 2004 by Birmingham Old Rep, which was followed by another adaptation performed in 2006 by Orlando Shakespeare Theater, with lyrics and book by April Dawn Gladu, and lyrics and music by Daniel Levy. Then in 2008 the Boom Kat Dance came up with a dance adaptation in Santa Monica at Miles Playhouse that was choreographed by the company and artistic directors Lili Fuller, Adam North, Emily Iscoff-Daigian, and Marissa Goodhill. The same year, an adaptation was created by Leonard Joseph Dunham and premierd in Fullerton, California at Hunger Artists Theatre Company. In 2009, The Castle Theatre of Wellingborough came up with another musical version of the story that was performed during the Christmas season.
The Jungle Book musical that is soon to be staged, is based on the Disney animation, and has been adapted as well as directed by Tony Award-winner Mary Zimmerman. Zimmerman won her Tony in the category of Best Director of Play, and has also won several Jeff Awards.
