Falling in love with music
Julia Michaels was born in Davenport, Iowa in 1993. She moved to California along with her family and began to sing at the age of twelve. Two years later, she bumped into songwriter Joleen Belle and that led to the duo penning down the theme song for the American comedy television series, ‘Austin & Ally.’ They later went on to write more songs for different films and T.V shows.
At the age of nineteen, Julia Michaels met the prolific songwriter, Lindy Robbins who has written tracks like, Dangerous for David Guetta, Want to Want Me for Jason Derulo and Classic for MKTO. In 2013, she and Robbins penned down two songs together, Fire Starter for the five-time People’s Choice Award winner, Demi Lovato and Miss Movin’ On for all-girl band, Fifth Harmony. The latter received gold certification in the United States and earned the band a Teen Choice Award nomination in the category of, ‘Choice Break-Up Song.’ Michaels wrote the lyrics for three more songs that year. Two of those, Undercover and Slow Down were recorded by Selena Gomez.
Julia Michaels then met American musician and songwriter, Justin Drew Tranter and they went on to write many songs together including, Sorry for Justin Bieber. The song appeared on his fourth studio effort, ‘Purpose’ and was included in Billboard’s ’25 Best Songs of 2015’ list. In addition, it reached the top spot in the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, South Africa, Mexico and Denmark. Other songs that Michaels and Tranter wrote together include, Love Myself and Rock Bottom for Hailee Steinfeld, Waiting for You for Demi Lovato, Good For You for Selena Gomez and Touch for Pia Mia.
Making her debut as a recording artist
Julia Michaels kicked off her recording career with the release of her self-titled EP which hit the shelves on July 20, 2010. Produced by Anthony Anderson and Steve Smith, it contained four songs on the track-list, Bailey, Closet, Down and Next to You. On April 18, 2012, she came out with her second extended play, ‘Futuristic.’ It was issued by Mighty Generation Music and had six songs, Futuristic, Getting Loud, Hands Up, Hawt Damn, Pancake and The Worst 30 Seconds.
In 2014, Julia Michaels recorded a song, Surrender which was a collaborative effort with the electronic music trio, Cash Cash. This song featured on the band’s fourth studio LP, ‘Blood, Sweat & 3 Years’ and received favorable reviews from the critics. A year later, she provided vocals for two songs, Straight into the Fire and Daisy. The tracks were for Zedd’s album, ‘True Colors.’ In 2016, she collaborated with Kygo on a song, Carry Me which reached sixteenth spot on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. The duo also performed this song at the closing ceremony of the Summer Olympics the same year.
On July 28, 2017, Julia Michaels spawned her third extended play, ‘Nervous System.’ The EP was produced by names like, Stargate, Benny Blanco and Martin & Robin. It charted in the United States, Australia, Canada, Sweden and New Zealand. The EP also produced three singles, Issues, Uh Huh and Worst in Me. The former earned her a Grammy nomination for, ‘Song of the Year’ and was certified three times platinum in the United States and Australia. Moreover, the track climbed to the eleventh spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
